Mark Braude has been a postdoctoral research fellow and lecturer at Stanford University and was named a 2017 Public Scholar by the National Endowment for the Humanities. His writing has appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Los Angeles Times, and The New Republic. His first book, Making Monte Carlo: A History of Speculation and Spectacle was published in 2016. Mark lives in Vancouver with his wife.

I knew that Napoleon had briefly escaped exile, but had no idea what a remarkable piece of history and moment in time it was, or what an amazing person he was apart from the many archetypal myths and areas where he has crept into our collective consciousness. Provides just the right amount of well-sourced detail and surrounding historical facts to the story. I pre-ordered this book because I liked Mark Braude's book on Monte-Carlo so well, and it exceeded my hopes. Highly recommended, whether the reader is a history buff or not.
I'm glad I read the book, but it could have been much better. 1) I noted several incomplete sentences and other grammatical mistakes. What happened during the editing process? 2) A list of characters and a brief description of each would have been great. I've found them helpful in War and Peace and other books with numerous characters. The actors in this book were introduced and then often neglected for many pages before being mentioned again. Especially during the first third of the book, I had to refresh my memory by either looking up the characters in the index and returning to the page on which they were introduced or googling them before continuing the story. 3) I would have loved better maps showing all the referenced hotspots, although they were easy to find online. 4) Most importantly, the book began with only a bit of information prior to Napoleon's surrender, progressed at slow, meandering pace during the days on Elba, and then madly raced to the end. The beginning was fairly free from detail; the ending was full of hurried detail. The lack of a balanced pace and the lack of complete editing made me wonder if the author rushed to meet a publication deadline. Perhaps that's the reality of today's publication process.
After having plowed through many comprehensive biographies of Napoleon, it was nice to read a pleasant book focused on only the first exile of this fascinating figure of world history. Why didn't they just kill him; why Elba; what did he do on the island; what happened to his wife; how did he manage to make it back to France?Max Braude has a good grip of his subject matter and writes clearly. He also provides the common reader the gift of short chapters. There is much useful information in the end-notes section of his book.If you ever visit Paris, be sure to see Napoleon's tomb at Les Invalides.

very well written interesting from beginning to end
Two hundred years after his time on the world stage, Napoleon remains a topic of interest for both the professional historian and the general public. Most of the attention focuses on his role as a political or military leader, a great deal of discussion centering on his final battle at Waterloo. The Invisible Emperor chooses to focus on a very short time during Napoleon's life--his brief exile to Elba just prior to his return to power and eventual downfall. Mark Braude gives great detail in this study, almost day to day, of the period. Some general readers may find this to be too much, but the real strength of the book lies in its finely drawn portraits of Napoleon, his wife Marie Louise of Austria, and his would be jailer Neil Campbell. Marie Louise is usually overlooked in Napoleonic era studies, but here we get a strong portrayal of a young woman who once hated the idea of Napoleon but grew to love her husband. You also get the plot to spring Napoleon from jail and the machinations of the European political scene. A very good read for the person who knows little about the period but also excellent for those who know Napoleon but not much about this brief episode in his life. A well told story for anyone interested in the subject, with great insight into Campbell and Marie Louise.
This is an enjoyable read about Napoleon's exile, stay, and escape from Elba. It's written as a novel, rather than as drab history, which makes it fun for Napoleon buffs. But it's also highly informative.Mark Braude enters the heads of his characters (historical figures) and explains what they were thinking, or how they felt, at any particular moment. But it's not baseless speculation. The book is heavily footnoted. Fifty pages of footnotes, in tiny print.Braude has examined an extensive amount of original source materials -- letters, diaries, official documents -- of all the participants and witnesses. As you read his "novel" like presentation, you can always go to the footnotes and see from where he obtained that bit of dialog, or why he attributes this particular passing thought to that general or minister, etc.Happily, this is not an academic text that seeks to deconstruct history. There are no attempts to impose fashionable critical analyses on events. Braude simply allows the historical participants to tell their story.
"The Invisible Emperor" is one of the best historical non-fiction books I have read in months. My interest in this period has generally been with Wellington and the British forces, but I was curious to learn about the events that led to Bonaparte's exile to, and subsequent escape from, Elba – which led to the showdown at Waterloo that sealed his fate once and for all.The intrigue among the European states that led to his exile to Elba was a product of statecraft, and the various countries involved, especially Russia, pushing their interests. Then, Bonaparte's transformation from the ruler of most of Europe to the "Emperor" of a tiny island off of theItalian coast makes for very interesting reading, as well as the machinations involved in his return.This book is very well-researched, with a wealth of detail, and is written in an engaging and informative manner – not at all dry like some history can unfortunately be. I recommend it very highly.
