Among current eclectic architecture firms in practice, McAlpine ranges in the second or third tier, in my opinion. The primary reasons are quite evident in this book and its sister book. The work of the firm is competent enough. The primary weakness in the work is an apparent attempt to be all things to all clients with the result being attempts to varying degrees of success in designing in various contemporary modifications of traditional styles. The most prevalent and most successful is a simplified Cotswold style.The excellent photographs, unfortunately, are not supported by either text or floor plans. The text, such as it is, is primarily vague ramblings of an "artistic" architectural nature which fail to communicate any clear philosophy of design or any information regarding the actual houses themselves. Unfortunately, traditional architecture is primarily about communication. The Achilles heel of the Modern Movement in architecture has been its failure to successfully communicate its values and meaning to a wider audience.

This is an excellent book on architecture and interiors. Being from Alabama, I'm partial to Bobby McAlpine's work and bought this book for my daughter, who is an interior designer. The book is very well written, has beautiful photographs that will inspire your creativity and makes a great coffee table book.

The photography of the homes is breathtaking. The narrative by McAlpine is ludicrous.

Stunning book! Photography is gorgeous and the archetecture is to die for. Wonderful gift for someone who loves beautiful home style/landscape books.

I see this as a vanity book in some ways. And I also think that the title is somewhat misleading. These are gorgeous, high-end residences.And in that sense awe inspiring. However, "Poetry" in living suggest much more than that. I will pass this volume on to a friend who works in a firm that creates such homes when finances are not considered. I found elegance, opulence, brilliance, but not poetry. Perhaps this is a high bar to meet--as poetry implies soul.

Lovely photos of very expensive homes. The text was dull and pretentious.

Wow!I am disappointed in the writing style and technical understanding of the author, Don Keith. The book is filled with errors in description of the various evolutions that a boat undertakes. I also found the author attempting to add tidbits with the apparent intent of gaining credibility for his understanding of Navy policies and procedures. (Example Chief Rendernick was reported to completed a final Chief Qual Board made up of Senior Chief Petty Officers and Master Chief Petty Officers. I don't think so in 1943.)In no way does the multitude of mistakes in telling this both wonderful and terrible story detract from the great response to a terrible situation by Rush, Odom, and Rendernick. I just wish the author had found a younger qualified submariner to proof his manuscript.As the author points out, after 60 years it is very hard to precisely relate conversations in a new telling. He had to take license with his quotes... I get it. That said, I found a large portion of the conversations that he related to be technically incorrect and also frequently not fitting the circumstance.I am glad I did read the book or I would not know of the exploits of these three men!PS Lest I sound like an idiot that can't enjoy a submarine book or movie without picking it apart. I thoroughly enjoy submarine fiction movies and books and really don't care if the inner and outer doors are both open and are closed with a come-a-long. It's when a non-fiction book or documentary tries to make a point and included numerous inaccuracies that I lose confidence in the narrative.

Good read! Was very interested in what Keith had to say about Chief Petty Officer Charlie Tom Odom. I too have done quite extensive research on him, and find that he was a giant of a man, even after his military service.

Excellent book. Could have been a little more detailed but the book did direct the reader to a website that will give written details of every ship in the navy and written detail of what happened on each war patrol

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The production/reading of the book was fine. The stories contained were a bit old school in the information that they covered, but that undoubtedly is due, in part, to the stories being retold some 60 years after the evebts. Information I knew about the silent service during WWII matched with what was being described.Not all of the information and stories, however, glorifies the silent service. Through no fault of the author, some of the accounts are disturbing, if not just being disheartening. Such stories, however, seem to recur with military campaigns from long before WWII and even up into the current efforts being made in Afghanistan where certain technologies are required for use even if they aren't necessarily the best of what is available, concerns for our service folk are sometimes secondary, and some folks in leadership positions turn out to be poor leaders.Overall, I enjoyed the book and felt that it was worth the money spent.
