Great overview of the Azores. My father and I stayed in Terceira and we visited all of the restaurants, tourist areas, etc listed in the guide and they were exactly as described. Not worth feeding the rivalry between the Azores and Madeira saying the “Bolo Lêvedo” is a kind of “Bolo do Caco”, another traditional cake from the other Portuguese island. Many localities denounce the volcanic nature of the Azores such as Furnas, Caldeirão do Corvo, Caldeira Velha and Lagoa do Fogo. The Pico Island is the second largest in the Azores and owes its name to the imposing Pico Mountain, that is the highest peak of Portugal. I think I got the perfect guide. Sorry folks, but I’ve been to the Azores three times, all to Sao Miguel (about to go for a fourth visit). While this small guide is inexpensive enough, it is poorly done. I get an error message for everything that says, “link,” and although most of the Facebook links and maps work, not all do. The “guide” is essentially 25 tips, most about Sao Miguel, and a couple each about places on Terceira or Pico islands, though the guide doesn’t even specify which islands! Most sites are places that every tourist will quickly learn about as the highlights of the island included on all the regular tours. It is written in English but not well written or organized.

DK Readers: Pirates: Raiders of the High Seas (Level 4: Proficient Readers)It is hard to find the right books for young children when it comes to Pirates, Robin Hood etc. In reality there was violence and criminal behavior, and yet both are filled with excitement that even grownups enjoy. What I would like is a book that gives us some of the romance and excitement with just a touch of reality. If that is what you want too, this may not be the book for you.This book has chapters on different real life pirates like Kidd and Blackbeard. One chapter is about Julius Caesar who was kidnapped (I never knew that). Most chapters are written in first person from either the pirate's or victim's point of view. They kind of ramble on "I did this and then I did that" blah blah. Some discussions that I could live without are about hanging punishments, torturing anyone who doesn't hand over their money, cat o' nine tails whipping. In one section it says a pirate was captured and tried without a lawyer then hanged and the body was left for people to look at. UGH that is way too much information for a child. What were they thinking? Also there is too much political intrigue that is boring. Sure they are trying to be realistic and factual, but come on.There is no excitement or romance in this book on pirates. I really don't care for it. We read lots and lots of DK readers. Most of them are interesting and well written. A few of the level 4 readers have too much information that doesn't directly pertain to the subject. I understand they are trying to increase the information for older children. We read the books to our 4 year old. He is intelligent and loves to learn. He is captivated by pirates and Robin hood and I just can't find the right books for him on these subjects.Maybe DK could make a junior version of pirates at level 2 or 3 and leave out the details of violence. Focus more on what it would be like to live on the high seas and look for treasure ships to capture. Then where to hide that treasure, and why did they hide it anyway? Why did they turn to pirating? A brief bit about actual real life pirates would be ok.

This book is recommended for children in grades 2-4, although they caution that these are rough guidelines.After a brief introduction, there are fictional first-person narratives of adventures with famous pirates from many places and eras, including a slave of Julius Caesar, both of whom are captured by pirates (and eventually freed); Henry "Long Ben" Avery, a British pirate of the late 17th century, Henry Morgan's pillaging, looting, and torture in Jamaica, the exploits of Captain Kidd and Blackbeard.Along with illustrations of such pirate essentials as guns and swords, ships and navigational instruments, food and flags, there is a drawing of a gallows and a man hanging from one, a man placed on the torture instrument, "the rack," several pictures illustrating a hangman's noose, a hanging body and a severed head tied to a ship. These pictures are not graphic or detailed, but they may be frightening to some children. 48 pages, with a brief glossary, and lots of pictures. The historical angle would have been more complete if an afterward had been written to explain the demise of the piracy.

This is a must for your young pirate lover. It provides a biography of the most infamous pirates from an unusual perspective. Learn about Roman Pirates from the eyes of Julius Ceasear's slave. Read about Blackbeard from the man who killed him. Hear the story of crazy Captain Morgan from one of his first mates. Our kids (8, 6, and 4) loved the entertaining and informative tales. This was a great springboard into our homeschool pirate study. It left the kids curious and motivated to further research specific pirate biographies. The info in the margins added details about the pirate world. It is a fantastic biographical resource but I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for an overview about pirate life in general.

I purchased this book for my 8 year old who is in 2nd grade. I am greatly dismayed with the violent content in this book that is described as appropriate for ages 8-10. I understand that the lives/habits/adventures of pirates were not glamorous and they were very violent but to mention murder on every other page, hangings and even a beheading is way, way too much for this age group! What were they thinking?! Most of the information in the book is very interesting but I will definitely screen any DK readers I purchase in the future. I don't really trust their discretion!

I bought this book for my son to practice his reading. He now reads it to me at least once a week. We have other DK Readers books and they are great for helping your child to read on subjects that interest them.

Engaging story for young boys. The pirate language was sometimes hard to read but otherwise the book was fine.

He returns to his alma mater, Brakebills College, a renowned (and only) school for magic where he becomes a teacher of “mending small things.” For this it seems is his main gift as a magician. He’s actually settling in quite nicely when his world again comes crashing down and he is fired from Brakebills. Before long he receives an invitation that will dramatically change his life for the better – or perhaps worse, let the reader decide.The invitation is verbalized by a black bird who, after weeding out the losers in the crowd, explains their quest is to find a old, shabby, but quality case that is locked with magic and possesses something very important although those seeking it don’t know what’s in it. There are new characters as swell, most notably Plum, about whom I won’t say more than that there are surprises in her past that feed directly into the story and history of Fillory.There is an even more startling twist to this story but you’ll have to read it to find out what it is.There is a lovely but almost throwaway paragraph forty pages into the book that captures its essence: Quentin is back in Brakebills, ten years older and no longer king of Fillory, just a very junior and temporary junior instructor there."Pacing the aisles of a silent classroom, surveying the exposed napes of rows and rows of students bent over their fall exams, he realized he’d lost his old double vision, the one that was always looking for something more, somewhere else, the world behind the world. It was his oldest possession, and he’d let it slip away without even noticing it was gone. He was becoming someone else, someone new."That’s what this book is about ultimately, growing up and becoming someone else, someone new. But en route the author tells us a rousing good story. These three novels are among the very best fantasy novels and also among the most grown up.

It has been quite a while since I finished this book. I always feel reluctant to write a review when I struggle with whether I liked it or not or whether, if it is part of a series, I liked the overall series. In general, I feel I liked this series. I certainly liked this book much more than the second....The Magician King.In reading other reviews, I feel that this book ends the series in a way that satisfies me and wraps up a few things we were wondering about. After blundering about for three books, Quentin gets to be a hero of sorts and restored Filliory with the help of Julia who has almost become a god. I thought she was gone after book 2 and I was glad to see her in this one. Perhaps the best part of this book, at least for me, was getting to known Janet a whole lot better. Prior to this book, she showed strength but seemed whiny and self absorbed. She still is but showed a resourcefulness that we had not seen before. Made her much more interesting.Quentin, Elliot, Janet, Alice, Julia and Penny figured prominently in this book and at least for me it was nice to see them all together if even for a minute.One thing I can truly agree with as far as the other reviewers are concerned, SyFy really screwed the pooch as far as the TV series is concerned. The show appears to have little or no correlation with the books. Sad, the books are so much better.So, I enjoyed the books....mostly. I would advise anyone interested in this series to read the books first and only then watching the SyFy program, if you must.

Down to earth, easy to read and understand. Every book gives a different perspective on OBE and this one has unique and interesting techniques and ideas. Author is very honest on his successes and his failings. Would recommend to anyone's library who has an interest in the subject.

What I liked about this book is the author's account of learning how to astral project. The trials and tribulations, his frustrations and almost child-like approach to it. Kind of like me! He is brutally honest at times which is refreshing.Three stars...not a lot of meat, but some really good tidbits hear and there to make it worth the read.Hope this helps.

Corrie ten Boom's life reminds us that faith can hold firm in the most difficult of situations. Radcliff edits the story down to the key events that pack the most emotional punch. This is a very well thought out book. Children will appreciate the story and older readers (like me) will appreciate that the book is cliche-free and lets the reader draw their own conclusions about the ten Boom family's experience. This book made me wonder what I would do in such a circumstance, which is the hallmark of a good book. Buy this book for the kids in your church and pass them out on January 27th or another suitable time.

Seven year old granddaughter read this book and was very taken with it. Then we watched a movie about Corrie Ten Boom and she was very attentive.

A wonderful story written in a beautiful and creative way! Many important lessons that kids of all ages will enjoy.

My children (ages 8 and 5) both really loved this story (though, admittedly, they were primed by watching the DVD version first). I heard a lot of "Just one more chapter! Please!" And I was thrilled because Corrie ten Boom's story is an excellent example of trusting in God, helping others, and forgiving even those who do horrible things to you. I can't recommend this book enough.

This was a great inspiring book! I encourage all ages to read this book!!!!!!!
