I have ordered this book in hardcover, and expect to be pleased with it. However, I would have preferred to buy the Kindle edition for the usual reasons - portability and convenience. Just before committing, I noticed this note : "Read it exclusively on Kindle for PC or Kindle for Mac." Called Amazon to confirm - no kidding - you cannot read the Kindle edition of this book using your Kindle, or using the Kindle app for any device other than a PC or Mac. The Amazon rep told me that it was because the book was 'too big' for the Kindle. That's a little hard to imagine, but that's what I was told. So, Kindle owners beware. Just because it's a Kindle Edition doesn't mean you can read it on a Kindle. That must make sense in someone's universe....Update - June 2012 - The Kindle edition of this book now works on the iPad Kindle app, and it is very good. I have updated to 4 stars, and I feel this book deserves that.

This is definitely a system's level approach to optical fiber. Essentially it provides you with the minimum motivation for modern optical fiber communication systems. It is also disjoint and relatively dry. My copy had Chapter 4 printed twice (extra paper). I'm not sure if there are better alternatives. Did anyone else notice the repetition within chapters?Pro: Great end-of-chapter references.Con: Boring, like dried leather.

I don't know if it happened in shipping or not, but the book was warped when it arrived. However, everything is usable.

The book does not have good examples on how to apply the concepts learned. The book is full with derivations of optics formulas, but lacks on showing their applications.

Keiser provides an excellent introduction to the field for those enetering the optical communications arena. He progresses from the fundamental bases for electromagnetic propagation in dielectric waveguides to specific practices and principles related to implementation of optical fiber in communications systems. Although the treatment of some commonplace modulation techniques in current practice is a bit light, this volume definitely helps to get one's feet wet in the discipline. Highly recommended for students, as well as those just entering the professional arena.

I've gotten this impression from many of what used to be my favorite writers. John Grisham, Larry McMurtry and especially Tom Clancy. They've said everything that needs to be said, but people keep paying them huge sums to keep talking. The result is substandard efforts from all of the above. After all, how many different iterations of geopolitical intrigue can you churn out before you start repeating yourself.

This novel is about the recruitment of three newcomers to join a supersecret organization that is devoted to killing or capturing terrorists and other bad guys.There is much suspense and many murders (by both good people and bad guys).Unfortunately, this novel begins with far too many extended descriptions of mundane events, requiring much skimming, looking for content.Murders commence again toward the end of Chapter 14, when a team of terrorists emerge from a men's room in a mall in Charlottesville, VA, shout "Allah Ackbar" and shoot a black security guard. Then another member of the team of terrorists spray the mall with machine gun fire.Two of our newcomers, twins Brian and Dominic Caruso, are (amazingly) in the mall. Dominic shoots and kills the second terrorist. Brian is almost killed by another terrorist, but his machine gun (also amazingly) is out of ammunition, and by the the time he reloads, Brian has disappeared.The third recruit's name is Jack Ryan Jr., and he has been assigned the title of analyst. He learns the name of the banker who is funding the teams of terrorists, and is given attaboys by the members of his organization.After this incident, things return to normal (more b. s. requiring skimming), with some exceptions. Unfortunately, these detrimental factors continue for the rest of the novel.Were it not for the many detrimental factors, I would have rated this novel a very good read. Instead, I found it barely readable, and have rated it accordingly

I think I've read all of the Jack Ryan books and I hate to admit it but I was a little disappointed with the first Jack Ryan Jr. book. With the possible exception of Without Remorse / Executive Orders, all of the Jack Ryan books were complete stories that often referred to events in other books. The Teeth of the Tiger is like an unfinished symphony. The book builds an interesting story and then just kind of ends - as if to meet a publishing deadline. There were a lot of unanswered questions which, hopefully, are addressed in Dead or Alive

If you like Tom Clancy novels, this is a good one to avoid - you probably won't like it. If this were Tom's first ever novel, it might be easy to overlook the deficiencies in this book. It really reads like it was ghost written.There are a couple of hallmarks of Clancy novels: character development, and a plot that gathers velocity for a fingernail biting finish. This book lacks either.As a follow on to the Jack Ryan universe, the attempt is made to introduce the next generation. Jack Jr seems to be afraid to step out of his parents' shadow, yet his peers and bosses see him as a child wonder and give him praise and assignments that have little evidence he is capable of. We are introduced (suddenly) to his two cousins: an FBI agent and a Marine. Somehow, the two seem interchangeable, and their adventures would be more at home in a James Bond book than a Clancy novel (they even allude to this).But the plot is so thin and one-dimensional it is hard to believe Clancy really wrote it. The introduction builds up this idea of collaboration between terrorists and a drug cartel, but this turns out to be a very minor part of the story. Then, along the way, it looks like there will be a major battle between the US and a terrorist organization. There are subtle hints about where this is going, but the story line never develops.All of the previous Clancy novels I've read spend the first 2/3 of the story setting up an action-packed ending that leaves the good guys clear winners, the bad guys clear losers, and readers eagerly anticipating the next novel. This one ends as the first 2/3 of a novel: The stage seems to be set for a dramatic ending, but it never comes. In fact, I couldn't believe that the story doesn't end - it just stops.As I said at the beginning, if you like a good Clancy novel, this will be a major disappointment.

Very hard to believe Tom Clancy wrote this book. I'm a huge Clancy fan and even enjoyed the new non-Clancy written novels. But "...Tiger" was a stinker. If this had been his first it would have one-and-done. Most every other book is worth your time but bring Nodoze if you want to get through this amateurish boor-fest.

About the Author

Terry A. Slocum currently is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Kansas. He received his B.A. and M.A. from SUNY at Albany, and his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Professor Slocum has published extensively in numerous refereed outlets, including Cartography and Geographic Information Science,  Cartographica, Journal of Geography, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, The Professional Geographer, and The British Cartographic Journal. He has authored the books Thematic Cartography and Visualization (Prentice-Hall, 1999)  and Thematic Cartography and Geographic Visualization (Pearson Education, Inc., 2005) . From 1999  to 2002 , he served as editor of Cartography and Geographic Information Science. He has been involved in numerous grants, including two from the National Science Foundation, and has received two Teacher Appreciation awards from the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at the University of Kansas.  From 2003 to the present, he has served as Chair of the Department of Geography at the University of Kansas. Fritz Kessler is currently an Associate Professor at Frostburg State University (FSU) located in Frostburg, MD and has been teaching a variety of geography courses since the fall of 1999. Professor Kessler’s cartographic background has evolved through a variety of cartographic related positions. He began his career in cartography while working in Ohio University’s Cartographic Center as an undergraduate student. After graduating from Ohio University in 1988 with a B.S. in Geography, he worked for the USGS Water Resource Division in Towson, MD as a Cartographic Technician. After receiving his M.S. from Penn State in 1991, he joined Intergraph as a Systems Analyst in Huntsville, AL. Desirous to return to production cartography, he took a position with R. R. Donnelley and Sons as a Cartographer. Although a fascinating experience, he chose to return to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas, during which time he worked for the Kansas State Geological Survey as a GIS Technician and as a Map Librarian at the T. R. Smith Map Library. In his ninth year of teaching at FSU, Fritz also holds a joint appointment through Penn State where he teaches and online course on map projections, datums, and coordinate systems in the Master of Geographic Information Systems degree program. Fritz has published in Cartographica, Cartography and Geographic Information Science, and American Congress on Surveying and Mapping’s Bulletin. Fritz is currently the Editor of Cartographic Perspectives, a peer-reviewed journal focusing on a broad array of cartographic topics, has served on the North American Cartographic and Information Society’s Board of Directors, and was the Secretary in the International Cartographic Association’s Working Group on Map Projections.

It is a very informative text. IT can get dry at times and the black and white print makes it difficult to cover multiple chapters at a time. It is a good text for anybody who wants to understand how to best present a map to the selected audience. It also explains how to change things to better suit different audiences

Before I got this book I was but a lowly graduate student. Now, having read it, I have magically transformed into esteemed cartographer Waldo Tobler.

This book was written with a statistical background in mind. Ideas are not spelled out in lay terms and are difficult to comprehend. The authors tend to define things mathematically in the text and verbally in the summaries. The figures and summary and much more understandable that the text.

Using for a course right now. Really in depth but easy to follow. Wish it came with some related practice materials

Don't buy this book in Kindle format!This book proved to be nearly unreadable in Kindle format (I can say nothing about the hardcover, which is probably quite OK) . The pages can be scaled as a whole, but the text cannot. And since the layout is made with the text in two colums, scaling the page and navigating pages up and down and sideways makes you lose the continuity, and in practice it becomes competely unreadable. Referring back to a previous page or consulting an illustration is nearly hopeless.It barely works om a (large) computer screen, but I cannot read it at all on a tablet.This is more or less a kind of glorified pdf, and it is not worth the money.

This is the assigned textbook, but I actually like reading it. How to make maps and what cartographers leave out.

This was part of my Intro to Cartography class and it is a very detailed and comprehensive cartography Bible and a must own: Lots of photos, detailed concepts unraveled, a glossary for mapping concepts and theory.

Our five year-old son LOVES this book and has requested it to be read to him almost every night over the last few weeks. I almost have it memorized. :-) The story is an easy read before bedtime or any time. It is also simple enough that he can begin reading it to himself, since he's now learning to read. Each page has simple words and short sentences with fun pictures and bright colors. And each story has a nice moral to teach. While other Disney Cars books have stickers, this one does not.The Step into Reading series 2 books are very nice starter books for a child who is learning to read. But it's quick read, so if you're looking for a book to read at bedtime, you might want to add a number of other books like this. I read three or four of these a night before he starts to fall asleep.

It has characters from the movie Cars, so there's that. But the story is really odd, I'm not even sure I follow. Mater is hiding all through out the book and somehow he gets wrapped up? Whoever wrapped him up is in on the secret??? I read it with my child and I just make up my own story as I go along to match the pictures.

A special book for a special 3 year old fan of Mater! I love the Step Into Reading books! They are great to help your child learn to read. The stories are short with great pictures! I have always had my kids use pictures as clues to tell me their own story! Anything to help build literacy skills. Level 2 is geared towards children Preschool to 1st Grade. I have added a few pictures below !

Bought this for my four year old nephew,who is literally obsessed with Cars.I tried buying him classic books(The hungry Caterpillar etc.)but they didn’t peak his interest in learning how to read.Cars related books however is doing the trick! When I received the book is was just as advertised ,there is no problem with the book as all.Would recommend !

This helped me advance my theory that in-university, CARS 2 never literally happened but Was another of Mater'so tall tales.

Of course, they like anything CARS, but the fun thing about this book is how Mater hides through the whole thing. They love to find him. It's a really fun birthday story!

We bought these as party favors for my son's birthday instead of a bunch of plastic junk, my son LOVES this book, we read it at least once a day.

My son Loves these step into reading books. They are easy to read & not too long and complicated for little ones learning how. They still have a good story tho and aren’t like some easy reading books that don’t really have a point/flow to the story.
