Not only was this an awesome journey with Prince Maric, Loghain, Rowan and everyone else involved, but what I REALLY loved about it is how it puts a very clear, interesting and even understandable perspective on Loghain's reactions/actions in Origins. I despised him in the game even while knowing in the back of my mind there were reasons for his paranoia and extreme behavior. Now we have a very clear picture of just what Ferelden faced (and he, Maric and the woman he ultimately loved) in the hands of the blood-sucking Orlesians. It honestly made me a little uncomfortable at first to feel that understanding and compassion towards Loghain simply because of my strong hatred of him from Origins, but what it comes down to is this: just like in "real life", we are all shaped and formed by the experiences we go through - whether we want to admit it or not. Our thoughts, views, opinions and actions are VERY RARELY based on blind reasons. Once we understand that about ourselves and each other, perhaps more compassion can occur and, ultimately, more change. With all of that being said, I loved this book. I can't wait to jump into the following ones and gain even further insight into the characters, Ferelden, Orlais and perhaps all or a majority of Thedas.

Entertaining, and moderately interesting characters, but some actions taken feel rash and unnatural for the characters development. There are time gaps, which since the book covers the highlights of a 6-10yr span makes sense, but to not cover major battles or conclusions feels messy. The book leaves you confused and wanting and not in a good way. It did help flush out Loghain, though I'll admit his actions in DA:O are even more confusing to me now in some regards. Maric's naivete is an obvious precursor to his son's own, but makes little sense due to being raised on the run. A sheltered Cailan/Alistair in a time of peace made a lot more sense. Other characters could have done with more flushing out to really understand their motives beyond duty/honor-bound sacrifice. Overall, the book travelled along well, managed to get me to care about the characters a bit, then suddenly threw a wrench into the developing story and abruptly ended with the major battles and next 3 years after being glossed over and no further character development to be had beyond the final decisions of the characters. I liked the book in part, but am left feeling frustrated with how incomplete it feels. If another 300 pages or splitting the story into 2 books would have abated such a feeling I would gladly have taken those options. I'm left with disliking every character that the story had engendered me towards.

If you are a Dragon Age fan you do want this book. The art work was why I really wanted it. It said faux leather cover and red ribbon book mark....some one seriously dropped the ball on that one!!! The cover is just textured cardboard for lack of a better description. Seriously if you want this book wait for it to drop even further in price.

I was introduced to the world of Dragon Age by my late mother-in-law. She knew I loved dragon lore and fantasy stories. My introduction came in the form of Dragon Age: Origins (PS3 Game). I was spellbound by the rich lore and fantastic characters.I was unaware of the novels until recently. I must say that I wish I had started reading them years ago. I would have shared them with her and she would have enjoyed the amazing world as much as I have.I look forward to reading the rest of the novels and expanding my love of this fantastic world.

I would like to state that I absolutely adore this book. I've got two paperback copies already and when I heard that they were making a deluxe edition, I jumped on the chance to own it. That said, the item is not as described. The cover is not faux leather and the ribbon bookmark is not included.Still, the book is nicely made and the illustrations inside are great and don't disrupt the text at all. If you are a fan of the book, I would still recommend it, just do so when the price isn't as steep seeing as how they cut back on features.

I'm a little late to the series and just recently finished playing the first two Dragon Age games and was hoping to get some insight on King Maric and some of the events preceding the games. I don't claim to be great at reviewing so this is just me giving my opinion...While it did help to fill in some things I was curious about, I was somewhat disappointed that the final battle/climax of the story was skipped. Bam! Like someone slammed the door shut before the end of the story... I also had trouble accepting this friendship between Maric and Loghain. It seemed Maric was relying heavily on Loghain because he lacked confidence and wanted him to stay and that's how their friendship developed but was it really friendship? Apparently handing out titles will go a long way in buying friends like Loghain. Basically this is about how Maric had to grow up and lose his naivety through his experiences and I wondered why he was so naive to begin with. It's not like he was raised in luxury and pampered and shielded from the world. You are left at times to draw your own conclusions like why Katriel flip/flops?... oh I guess it's because she fell in love? The book didn't convince me and I found myself despising this character for reasons I am not sure. And how could Maric be so trusting and naive of a stranger during a time when he is literally being hunted for his life. I also felt Rowan was a bit underdeveloped and she could have been so much more but mostly I was very curious about Loghain and there is somewhat of a disconnect between his character in this book and in the game. You do see some of this true colors coming out here and there and maybe how he came to be how he was in Origins. It seemed some parts of the story went on and on and others never fully developed. All in all at least I got the pre-story of Origins which is what I was after and I may delve into a few of the other books to find out if there is more to be learned.
