The names of the puzzles have been removed in this book for some reason, so solvers are not able to discern the theme of the puzzle and use it to help them solve it. I find that to be one of the most fun things about Will Shortz, so this book was a bit of a disappointment. Also, these are not the NYT puzzles you long for, but much smaller, and I think, easier ones. If you're a serious puzzler, buy The New York Times Supersized Sunday Crosswords 500 Puzzles edited by Will Shortz. It's a fabulous book that will entertain and vex you for years.
It's probably my own fault for not looking more carefully but I am not thrilled with this book. It's quite small, heavy and very thick, with small print that makes it hard to focus on the print after 30 minutes or so. Puzzles are divided into three categories, easy to difficult, but missing are Shortz's little blurbs or comments that made previous books so fun. There's plenty of room on the pages for those comments and I sadly miss them! Three stars.
The book is a fat paperback with those rough, off-white, yellowy pages that show the print through from the other side. Each page has a lot of margin space at the top, but the puzzle and clues are printed in a tiny font. I really wish they were a little bigger. On the other hand, the answers in the back are on bigger-than-usual grids. I am disappointed, because I was looking forward to more Will Shortz puzzles.
The pages in this book are very small. If you have any vision problems you might want to pick an edition with a larger paper footprint.
Idk, my wife & I are 27 yrs. it's not that the clues are so dated/old, per se, I think I just wonder how any of these made Will Shortz's "favorites"? They're really not the top tier of anything; clever, fun, relevant.... but now I have a whopping book of puzzles I don't want to/ can't do.....
I didn't realize this was a half-size book, which is harder to work with. The first 139 puzzles are rated with one star for simplicity and a bit boring for anyone who has been working puzzles for a while. The other thing that bothers me with this and other crossword books is that when they were first published in the newspaper, these puzzles had headline teasers to give you an idea of the theme of a puzzle which makes solving more fun. When the puzzles are moved to compendiums like this one, they leave out the theme.
This is a nice collection of crosswords (and a generous quantity considering the cost). I do wish Will Shortz would add the DATE each puzzle was originally printed in the times...it would help the solver narrow down the possibilities to what existing at that time period. Also, I wish the book were spiral bound...it is annoying to try to solve these with a think spine bending the edges of the pages.
This collection is a must-have for crossword lovers, as it (1) consists of 400 selected puzzle from NYT, and (2) celebrates the 20-year wonderful editing of Shortz, and (3) titles "Will's best".Just receive the book and solve some of them and it is satisfying as it could be. So the five stars is a prediction (it is impossible to review after solving all 400 puzzles) and I believe that.What surprises me is the size of the book. It is not in spiral-bound or large-print but in paperback! Somehow I hate it because there is no room for taking notes (I can always learn something new in NYT crosswords), however a paperback of 400+ pages looks like a serious (non)fiction and I enjoy the disguise. One can choose a page randomly and plunge in and enjoy it immediately. I must say that rare paperback (non)fictions has such an amazing property, lol.Another 20 years is ahead, Thanks for the wonderful puzzles!
