I would read anything Tracy Kidder writes. But I have to say I preferred Mountains Beyond Mountains, his account of the life and work of Peter Farmer.

Strength in What Remains by Tracy KidderThis is an amazing though disturbing book. It tells the true story of a medical student, Deo, who escaped from the devastating civil war and genocide in Burundi and came to the United States. The author details the traumas he encounters both in his home country and as an immigrant who doesn’t speak English. The story is told with a number of flashbacks and flash forwards which give almost agonizing detail about his trials and his pain through all this. Deo is amazingly persistent and determined to complete his medical training and to help his people heal. Deo should inspire all of us to overcome our troubles and pursue difficult goals in life.

It is sobering to those of us in "the West" when we realize how little we actually know of the suffering so many thousands/millions are enduring in places of civil unrest all over the world. This book is told by another about Deaogratias a third year medical student who was of the Tutsi tribe in Burundi who managed to escape a massacre. The tale of his wandering 6 month journey through the forest hiding from everyone, not knowing who is friend or foe, eating roots and drinking unsafe water, then languishing in a refugee camp is riveting. He landed in NYC, and was helped by other African immigrants to get an under the table cash only subsistence job delivering groceries, to live as a squatter with them because it was "free" lodging, This brilliant man learned what American racial prejudice felt like, choosing to live in Central Park for 6 months until he was ultimately helped by a former nun who found him a family who invested in his education and helped him to ultimately thrive in the US, finishing medical school at Columbia University and Harvard then returning to Burundi to help his people recover and build themselves an d their communities back up. I think of him as the Mandela of Burundi. I highly recommend this book in both the audible and kindle formats. It is one that makes you think and tell other people about it.

Although I've read a number of books regarding immigration, war, and tremendous obstacles various people have had to face before and after arriving to the US, this book really went into such detail that it was difficult to read at times. Deo's brutally honest story made me glimpse at the civil wars and genocides in Burundi and Rwanda, giving me some understanding of what happened, though I'm sure I can never truly understand fully. I will admit, I was completely ignorant about the issues in Burundi or that it also dealt with similar issues that Rwanda did. In the process of returning to Burundi and not only facing what had happened to Deogratis, but the tenacity to build his clinic to help his family and neighbors, and the healing that it gave him was very poignant, heartbreaking, yet promising. Thank you for bringing this memoir forward so that I could share in these experiences.

Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world, but the misery suffered by its population goes well beyond profound poverty. As is well known, both Burundi and the neighboring country of Rwanda had gruesome civil wars in the late 1990s. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in fighting between the two main ethnic groups in these countries, the Hutu and the Tutsi."Strength in What Remains" is the story of Deogratias--or "Deo"--a young Burundi medical student and a Tutsi. When the Burundi war breaks out in 1994, Deo escapes to New York with $200 in his pocket and finds work as a grocery store delivery clerk. Living on the street, he almost gives up in despair, but he befriends a politically active nun who finds him a home in Lower Manhattan with an older, childless couple, who later pay his way through Columbia. Deo subsequently finds work with the global health organization founded by Paul Farmer, the subject of one of Kidder's earlier books, "Mountains Beyond Mountains." With the experience he gains at PIH, Deo eventually returns to Burundi to build a health clinic there.Tracy Kidder's true story of Deo's life has two parts. The first part tells Deo's story from the time he is a small child to the time he graduates from Columbia and starts to work at PIH. It's powerful, indeed frequently overwhelming. But the second half of the problem is problematic. Here Kidder describes the trip he took with Deo back to Burundi, to retrace the path Deo's took while escaping the violence and to make plans for the health clinic. Reading this section recalls watching a Michael Moore movie: you just wish that Moore would get back behind the camera and make his movie, without inserting himself into it, and the same seems true of Kidder. His reactions to the killing fields of Burundi aren't what should matter, and yet there he is telling you about his inability to feel the appropriate feelings. There's also another problem with the second half of the book: sometimes it seems that Kidder has forgotten what he already wrote. For example, one of the most memorable moments in Deo's experience occurs when he's been on the run for weeks, and, exhausted, is about to give up just short of the Rwandan border. A Hutu woman sees him, coaxes to keep moving, and lies the border police saying that he is her son, in order to save him. Kidder tells this story in detail, in the first half of the book, writing: "'I'm too tired,' [Deo] told the woman. `I'm just going to stay here.' `No, no,' she said. `The border, it's nearby.'". In the second half, when they revisit the scene, Kidder describes a conversation he has with Deo: "'What was it you told her?' I asked over the noise of the plane. Gazing out, Deo replied `I'm too tired. I'm just going to stay here.' And she said `No, no. It's not too far to the border.'"I happened to read this book shortly after reading Chimamanda Ngozi's "Half the Yellow Sun," a fictional account of a different African civil war: the Nigerian war that predated Burundi's by about 30 years. Both books pack an emotional wallop, but somehow Ngozi's fiction had an immediacy for me that Kidder was approaching in the first part of his book, but upset in the second.

I loved this book. It is the true story of a young man from Burundi who physically survived the genocide in his country and surrounding countries. But the real story is the mental anguish he suffered and the mental and physical struggles he overcame to make a worthy life for himself and for his home country. Deo is a remarkable person. This is a book you can’t forget. I chose it because of the title...lines from a Wordsworth poem that is a favorite of mine. Deo is the epitome of that line.

Great resource for theologian - practitioners and laymen who are thinking and theologizing.

It is a good book, well aware of its limitations, easy to read, informative and reflective. The focus is less biographical than I expected and didn't include some of the classic episodes in MLK's life. The strength comes in its presentation of the development of MLK thought. Well worth the price and the time invested. My main concern is when it deals with some contemporary concerns that MLK didn't dealt with and tries to guess what would have MLK done. Maybe there was a better use of those pages.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For that reason alone, readers might be interested in learning about King. This 2009 book, part of a series called "Armchair Theologians" about various Christian thinkers is an excellent place to start. The author, Rufus Burrow, Jr., is Indiana Professor of Christian Thought and Professor of Theological Social Ethics at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis. Burrow has written and lectured widely about King and about the philosophical movement of Personalism often associated with King. In this book, Burrow succeeds admirably in making King's thought accessible to readers without a background in philosophy or theology and without a detailed knowledge of American history. The book is written for high school or undergraduate use, but it can also be read with benefit by others, including by those with knowledge of King. The book includes illustrations by artist Ron Hill which capture a great deal of the essence of King and which enhance Burrow's text.Burrow focuses on King as a thinker and as a man of ideas. He wants to counter a commonly accepted view that sees King largely or only as a social activist. Thus, his book argues that King was "a man of serious philosophical, theological, and ethical ideas who was intentional about living and applying these in his efforts to bring about the beloved community -- that is, the world as God would have it." Burrow also discusses some of King's activism, including his leadership of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the campaigns in Birmingham and Selma. He discusses King's opposition to the Vietnam War, and the reasons King gave for his opposition, and his focus on poverty, militarism, and materialism in the last three years of his life. Some of King's best-known activities receive little or no mention in this book such as the 1963 March on Washington with the "I have a Dream" speech. It is a loss that Burrow does not give attention to this speech. In addition, the book doesn't describe King's activities in support of the strike of the sanitation workers in Memphis at the time of his assassination in April 1968.The book begins with a brief survey of American racial history, beginning with the slave trade, and continuing through the Constitution, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the decision in Plessy v. Ferguson. Burrow emphasizes what he sees as the heavily racist character of American society as a backdrop to the work of King.Burrow explores King's family background and early life showing how it helped King become who he was. He finds that King's background laid the groundwork for the philosophy and theology he would later study and adopt and put to practical use in his Civil Rights work.Burrow discusses King's studies and the lessons he took from them about God, the dignity of human persons and about an objective moral order. Burrow discusses briefly but well some of the thoughts and thinkers that influenced King, including, perhaps surprisingly, Hegel, the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, the Social Gospel movement, and, most of all the Personalism, taught at Boston University where King earned his PhD. A subsequent chapter of the book continues with intellectual influences on King's philosophy of nonviolence by exploring the thought of Gandhi. When Burrow turns to King's activism, he emphasizes the ground laid by King's predecessors and, in particular, the work of women in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Burrow's discussion of the Birmingham campaign emphasizes King's decision to get children involved and the consequences and controversy resulting from this decision.Burrow gives substantial attention to King's activities following the enactment of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. King took his civil rights campaign north and broadened it to include the poor and to protest against the Vietnam War. Many people at the time and today disapproved of the activities of the later King. Burrow, in the company of other scholars, sees them as at the heart of King's mission. Burrow argues that if King had lived he might well have joined in the feminist movement and in the movement for gay rights. I think it might have been better to spend more time exploring King as he was without speculating about where he might have gone in years that were denied him.Burrow emphasizes King as a religious thinker and as an advocate for love and justice for all. He concludes:"My hope is that these armchair reflections on Martin Luther King will inspire readers to delve much more deeply into the study of King, particularly his sermons, speeches and interviews. King was truly a man of ideas who was committed to social activism as a way to create openings for the development of the beloved community. Moreover, if we are to learn anything from this book, let it be to live our faith more boldly in every area of life, for no area of human existence is exempt from the relentless care and compassion of the God of the Hebrew prophets and Jesus Christ."Burrow offers an inspiring introduction to King. It should encourage readers to explore further and to think for themselves about King and his mission.Robin Friedman

A rich resource for anyone who seeks a basic understanding of Dr. King as a theologian. When it comes to King the intellectual, or the King who translated ideas into practical action, Burrow has set the standard for first-rate scholarship.

I really love this book. It presents foods that are currently popular and and also new takes on traditional foods. The book presents techniques at four different levels, from simple to complex. However, one can dive into whatever pleases. For instance, though I am professionally trained and can prepare complex foods, level one includes a recipe for home made ricotta, which I have wanted to prepare for a long time, but haven't gotten around to. The fact that I can turn it into Lemon-Ricotta Pudding ala Chef Daniel Patterson makes it all the more fun to try. Another asset of this book is that the instructions are beautifully and understandably written, and the pictures illustrate the process well. I like the fact that the photographs present the foods and steps simply , and yet they look so good that I can't wait to prepare them. I am excited to prepare the meat ravioli, which my mother-in-law made to perfection. This is the first recipe that causes me to salivate! (She showed me her magic, which involved a pinch of this and a handful of that, but I didn't quite get it.) I am pleased to add this book to my collection and am quite sure I will learn a great deal despite years of cooking and cookbooks.

What a great book. What a perfect gift for everyone you know. male or female. Its a good read and fun !

I always borrow cookbooks from the library before I purchase them because I already have an obscene number of cookbooks. I don't need any more, especially with the plethora of recipes available to us via the Internet. However, "Master Recipes: A Step-by-Step Guide" is definitely on my list of books to purchase. It has a wealth of recipes, both common and unusual. Included in the unusual recipes are beef jerky (I recently had homemade beef jerky for the first time and it was amazing), marshmallows, ricotta cheese, and caramels. I know that there are brave souls out there who make these items from scratch, but I have never had the courage to try. I like this book so much that I'm going to treat myself to a new copy from Amazon rather than a used copy from a third seller.
