#44,655 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is such a powerful story that really reaches into one's heart and shows you things that need to be made clear. I have read the Bible almost daily for over 40 years, and although I have memorized a lot of it, some parts have always eluded me with their archaic and symbolic wording and anachronistic references. But reading this book has brought many of my favorite scripture passages into a new light and a new form of understanding. Things that made only a glimmer of sense before are now very clear. I thank Mr. Rubart for that... nice job!As to the writing, I found the conversations natural, the descriptions enough to get a picture but not so much to drone on and on, and the spelling and grammar were spot on. I don't recall seeing any editing mistakes or those dreadful "spell check" errors one tends to see in digital books. His writing style is tight and keeps you running at a good pace - not so slow you lose interest, nor so fast you feel like you're going to miss something important or like he's trying to rush you to a conclusion.I very highly recommend this book not only to Christians but to anyone who enjoys a good mystery and "paranormal" read.

I almost never give a 5 star review. Every book seems to be lacking something to make it the top. This book gets a rousing 5 star review. Someone wrote if Peretti wrote the shack it would be this book. I love peretti and I really enjoyed the twists of the shack but this book is far better. Imagine, someone loves you enough to build you a mansion really, and knows you well enough that it suits you perfectly and has your memories in it, then imagine the person is long dead and you can't even remember him. He also seems to know your every thought and move. Hmm... what would you give up for that? Mysterious doors appear? Mysterious strangers? Odd unexplainable happenings. Oh yes, this book causes you to think of Gods love and what he wants to give us, if we'll only allow Him to take charge. I truly had a hard time putting it down and stayed up late too many nights reading it. Will look for more from this author but he has set the bar pretty high for himself! By the way, I forgot to mention it isn't a horror book. Thriller yes, suspenseful yes, but not scary or horror.

3.5What was really engaging about this book was its originality. As Micah goes between two worlds, they change. His decisions have tremendous effects and seeing these unfold are what makes this book a real page turner. My hesitation with this is the theological aspects. Micah gets a lot of spiritual advice here. Eventually as a reader you recognize that the advice conflicts. Some of it is from God, some from Satan. My concern is with the authoritative way both perspectives are presented - this could lead to some reader confusion. Of course the intention here is good - people are pointed to Jesus and the Bible eventually very clearly. And with-holding clarity at the start does make the book more intriguing for the reader. Perhaps my main issue is I don’t believe God could or would work like this. However, this is a very interesting story and I can see people reading this that otherwise wouldn’t read Christian fiction. I just hope they read to the end.

I know this is a Christian but it would be helpful to anyone. It reminded me of Larry Crabbs’ book “Inside Out”. It helps you look into your subconscious and take a serious look into your “Self” side and Gods side and the issues they cost. In this case it cost the main character a dream situation. It also reminds me of the Bible verse about seek and you will find. The doors to the “Rooms” show me that that verse can work both ways. You can open a door to your self will or one to Gods will.Reading the book, I lost track of time. It is so well written and so smooth that I finished the book in 4 hours. Only other book that I can say that I read in that amount of time was “This Present Darkness”.Even if you do not believe in God but you want to see how the mind can work you should read this. I want to read this again because I know I missed some areas. I want to read other books by James Rubart.

Fantasy Island: Holy Ghost Edition.A captivating spiritual journey of self-discovery and the search for truth. A vivid depiction of Holy Ghost encounters and visions. And a poignant story of what ifs.Within each visitation, Micah Taylor is drawn more fully in Truth. And awareness of his choices becomes clear. And when the gauntlet is thrown, “Choose you this day whom you will serve,” Micah is convinced he can have both.It was easy to read this story from an outsider perspective, urging Micah to choose the good thing. The right thing. But the deep and profound Truth of this story is we all are faced with The Choice: the narrow way or the wide path. And the shiny lure and ease of the wide path woos us so sweetly. It was easy to chastise Micah for teetering on the fence. Until we realize that we all teeter on the fence.Rooms is a story that gives the reader pause to think, to consider. How many times has Holy Spirit sent visions and visitations that we didn’t recognize or stop to acknowledge? What if Micah Taylor was watching us when we received the cryptic letter? Would he chastise us for teetering on the fence? Or would he cheer us on as we make the choice for Truth?I purchased this book on Amazon. I offer my review of my own free will, and the opinions expressed in my review are my own honest thoughts and reaction to this book.#Blogwords, Tuesday Reviews-Day, #TRD, Book Review, Rooms, James L. The Boy Who Dared, by Susan Campbell Bartoletti

From School Library Journal

Grade 6–9—In the newly formed Third Reich, Hitler's initial political doctrine is filled with hopeful solutions for a country plagued with unemployment, poverty, and a post-World War I feeling of defeat. Propaganda and promises quickly turn to oppressive new laws including the required participation in the Hitler Youth. Helmuth Hübener enters the program and is at once impressed with the bravado, shiny uniforms, boots, and patriotic fever sweeping the country. But his Mormon-based teachings trigger questions in his mind about the reality behind the regime's invasions of neighboring countries, mistreatment of Jewish citizens, and closely controlled media. He creates an underground newsletter with information gathered from BBC reports using an illegal shortwave radio. As he secretly distributes the flyers throughout the town, his boldness encourages him to gather several accomplices resulting in his arrest, trial, and execution. The novel opens as he is on death row, and the story is told as a series of flashbacks. Helmuth is portrayed as a brave, outspoken voice amid a family of acquiescing brothers, mother, and new SS stepfather. Based on a real person, the novel includes black-and-white photos of Hübener and his family. Bartoletti offers another perspective on the Holocaust, demonstrating that even if the effort proves unsuccessful, the courage and convictions of a minority should be motivation to speak the truth rather than remain silent. It's a message that must be continually emphasized as a lasting legacy of the Holocaust.—Rita Soltan, Youth Services Consultant, West Bloomfield, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

*Starred Review* In Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler’s Shadow, Booklist’s 2005 Top of the List for youth nonfiction, 2005, Bartoletti included a portrait of Helmuth Hübener, a German teenager executed for his resistance to the Nazis. In this fictionalized biography, she imagines his story as he sits in prison awaiting execution in 1942 and remembers his childhood in Hamburg during Hitler’s rise to power. Beaten and tortured to name his friends, he remembers how he started off an ardent Nazi follower and then began to question his patriotism, secretly listened to BBC radio broadcasts, and finally dared to write and distribute pamphlets calling for resistance. The teen’s perspective makes this a particularly gripping way to personalize the history, and even those unfamiliar with the background Bartoletti weaves in–the German bitterness after World War I, the burning of the books, the raging anti-Semitism––will be enthralled by the story of one boy’s heroic resistance in the worst of times. A lengthy author’s note distinguishes fact from fiction, and Bartoletti provides a detailed chronology, a bibliography, and many black-and-white photos of Helmuth with friends, family, and members of his Mormon church. This is an important title for the Holocaust curriculum. See the Booklist interview with Bartoletti, in which she discusses how this teen’s story moved her. Grades 6-12. --Hazel Rochman

A thoughtfully written book about a very brave young man who lived a brief life of courageous resistance to the evils of Naziism during WWII.The book is based on a true story. It is written clearly, it lets the facts of his life speak for the lessons to be learned. I was left with awe, gratitude, sadness, and admiration for this young man and for others like him of all ages who have stood up to evil. It's one of the books that touches you for the rest of your life. I will not forget this story.I recommend it to anyone.

I really enjoy reading stories based on true life experiences. Though the end is evident from the beginning, you are taken through the life and challenges of a young German youth who wants to know and share the truth about how the Nazi's are misleading and beguiling the German people as to what is actually happening in WWII. This teenager refuses to succumb to the lies about the Jewish people and to the required behavior of the "Nazi Youth" of which he is required to become a member. He values his immediate family and his true friends. Knowing his own inevitable fate he does everything he can to save his two dear friends...who later help to tell his story. It is an excellent story to teach todays youth to think for themselves and cherish in their heart and their life what they know to be good and true and right. Not to be beguiled by the gang mentality and see that no matter what, to stand for righteousness.

I started reading this book out loud to my 8th grader as a joke...he left for soccer practice and I finished the book. It was for his English class. I could not put it down. I finished it in two hours. The characters draw you into the struggle of being in Nazi Germany and watching your neighborhood be torn apart. The bravery that takes place in this book is incredible.

Helmuth Hubener is an ordinary young man caught up at first in the National emotional fervor for the Fuhrer. But when his eyes are opened to the horrors he sees going on around him, will he have the courage to take a stand?Compelling and powerful, this is "a novel based on the true story of a Hitler Youth." In reading it, don't be surprised to find yourself pulled into Helmuth's life. I couldn't put it down, even though I knew (having read another account of Hubener) what ultimately happens. And don't forget to read the author's notes in the book.(Read this book in conjunction with Bartoletti's Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow. Combined they make a powerful history lesson regarding life for Germany's youth during Hitler's reign.)

what a great book, my son could not put it down.

My daughter had to read this over the summer for middle school. My daughter said it started out slow but after the first chapter she got really into it. So if your kid has to read this, just tell them struggle through until the second chapter.

This book was requested by my son's teacher for a group reading and discussion. I think it is a good book for middle school kids.

My son used it for a book report and it kept him interested

The bloated bureaucracy; the rules; the laws; the regulations; are so integral to our lives that we no longer would recognize a life without these burdensome evils. We continue blindly with no discretion, a growing behemoth, with no end in sight; this was never meant to be. With the thousands upon thousands of pages of rules and regulations we believe we can remove all conceivable risks, contemplate every eventuality, plan for everything; all in the name of "rights", and fairness. What is meant for good, and to bring about harmony, only results in stagnation, closed businesses, higher prices, less choice, rise of litigation, etc. We all pay a price. Ingenuity pays a price. Ironically, "[t]he more precise we try to make law, the more loopholes are created". Mandated perfection only ends in the opposite, along with an incredible waste of money and manpower, not to mention it treats individuals as criminals. This Expansion of law into agencies and programs was never meant to be. Three big culprits (though there are many) are OSHA, EPA, and the USDA.Howard says this emotionally based attitude has replaced humanity; and, that it has its roots in rationalism. He gives numerous examples, with many rulings so ridiculous even to the point of laughable. Although Wilson's "Great Society" and Roosevelt's "New Deal" (whom he quotes) spawned this form of bureaucracy it still took many more presidents to bring us to this point. These two progressives probably never envisioned it to this degree. It takes more than an individual, it requires an unbridled beast--the first beast--government. His sources are lengthy for so compact a volume. There is also a lengthy bibliography, but it would have been helpful to add endnotes. We need to get back to individual responsibility; the direction we're headed is simply not attainable."The virtue of rights, at least to the advocates, is that they are absolute. What's a little inefficiency when there is complete justice for me? Absolutes sound good, but generally leave behind a landscape of paradoxes and bruised victims."

First, the scary part. This book was published nearly 25 years ago. The stories about the abuses condoned by are legal system are appalling, but they are old stories. What one has to wonder and worry about is how many more situations that have occurred in the last 25 years. You can be assured the legal system and people's state of mind hasn't improved (i.e. returned to normalcy) in that time. The message is quite clear: our legal system is very sick, if not broken. The result is that no one wants to take responsibility for fear of being sued or inconvenienced. Plus, the definition of "rights" has been so badly distorted by legislation and court system that the social and actual costs to Americans is becoming intolerable. The direction we are all heading is only making the conditions worse. Something has to change, but how long are we willing to wait? The politicians have us bouncing off the walls. Obama promoted change and now Trump wants to drain the swamp, but neither have addressed the source problem; the legal system needs to be renovated in the extreme. This book offers some ideas. This book is still very timely about the situation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who about the health of the United States. I plan on reading more books by this author.

This is a panoramic review of government regulation run amok, with many arresting examples. The material seems somewhat dated, e.g., references to the Bush era refer to Bush 41, but still relevant. There has been little progress in solving any of the issues that are discussed, if memory serves, aside from occasional suspension of burdensome, time-consuming rules during emergencies. (Thus, as related on p. 172, the Santa Monica freeway was rebuilt in 66 days after the 1994 earthquake in Los Angeles.)"The Death of Common Sense" consists of four long chapters, presented without an introduction or conclusion. They deal with (1) the impossibility of devising laws and regulations that will sensibly address every variation and permutation of a given problem without the need for human judgment; (2) the pitfalls of elevating legal process over objectives; (3) the destructive consequences of creating "rights" for more and more disadvantaged groups without much heed to the burdens imposed on the rest of the population; and (4) the author's proposed solution to the problems discussed, which is for all concerned to stop looking to the law as a source for "final answers."Howard is not averse to government regulation as such; indeed he lauds the accomplishments of the New Deal (pp. 77-78) when administrators could act with lightning speed because their brand new agencies were writing on a blank slate. The passage of the Administrative Procedure Act shortly after World War II (p. 78) started things on a downward track, in his telling, from which it has never recovered. It is refreshing that an attorney would write a book so critical of his own profession, and most of the specifics ring true. However, Howard gives insufficient attention to the possibility that the government has spread itself too thin. Empowering unelected bureaucrats to exercise seat of the pants judgment in addressing all of the issues in which the government is involved might be more efficient than the present arrangement, but would the country like the results?
