As the title suggests, this book is a collection of essays written by historians who have, to use the expression, been there and done that. Although these stories come from all over the world and take up a wide variety of topics, they are held together by a common theme: it is unrealistic to think that any archive contains merely the raw materials of history. Why? Because even the archive itself has a history, a history that dictates factors like what the archive contains, how its contents are arranged, how items are labeled, access to materials, and the unpredictable experiences of researchers. A second and related theme is that historians these days are bound to sense a tug-of-war being waged. On the one hand are those positivist ideas about the high level of precision one can supposedly achieve as a result of archival research. (Perhaps such notions have been inspired by recent advances in forensic science popularized by television crime dramas). On the other hand is a postmodern view according to which not only history but even the archive itself is understood to be an interpretation. People who aspire to become historians, and armchair historians who want to know what it's like to dig around among the primary sources, should read this book.

Archive Tales is a book I chose to create a scholarly review for my "Introduction to Archives" class.It is an excellent text filled with the experiences of 15 researchers of archival materials.The introduction by compiler Antoinette Burton gives the keys to the map of stories. Many of the searchers attempted to mine needed information for Dissertations and other scholarly works.A favorite quote: ”Archives as object gather meanings over time and their exchange and physical transformation and that meaning for us today” (Randolph, page 210).Recommended by Dr. Matthew Griffis - University of Southern Mississippi (2018)

I read this book about 2 weeks ago, and it is nothing short of what I expected: that is, a book that would practically yet powerfully make arguments for the existence of God and - more importantly - gateway into the person of Jesus Christ. Theism is the richest worldview not because it adds the greatest quantity of explanations (indeed, gods like Zeus or Thor or Allah fail to add any explanation) - but because it offers one explanation: the person of Jesus Christ; by Him, the personable attachment of theism is enabled.This book therefore brings us first into the logical possibility of theism by grounding arguments, simply put, in God. The reader will essentially learn why the theistic worldview is most coherent in general. Afterwards, the final chapters will speak on the person of Jesus Christ to make a "fully" coherent view. Without a personal deity, theism simply becomes empty, like a well that cannot supply water: Deism.However, holding to Deism after reading this book will almost certainly make little sense. The arguments alone from the cosmological argument provide us with erudite reason to believe the cause before us was, as well, personal. Indeed, the entire argument before the Christian chapters in this book point towards a personal deity in general.Consequently, we are left with the choice of picking up 4 different sponges to clear up the black sludge on the window of reality after reading this book. 1) We may choose to pick up the water-less sponge of atheism and find ourselves with no success in our attempt. 2) Or we may pick up the agnostic sponge and find ourselves able to clear up only half of the window. 3) We may even boldly pick up the deistic sponge and clear 3 quarters of the window. 4) But only will we have enough soapy water in the theistic sponge to clear up the entire window of reality.And once we do that, we will undoubtedly find not only God's image in the window but, as well, Jesus Christ's.This is arguably the greatest friend-sharing friendly and user-reading friendly book I've read on Christian apologetics. You'll remember many things to apply in real-world discussion. It helped me with many of my own doubts.

As Craig excels in explaining, Christianity is not based on “blind faith” but makes perfect rational and logical sense in the world in which we all live.The book is roughly divided into three parts: the first two sections tend to work outside of the Bible and detail arguments for the existence of God from the stance of reason and philosophy. Here, Craig searches for answers to existential questions (e.g. Why does anything exist? Why did the universe begin? What about suffering?). These questions weigh evidence and tend to rely on science and logic alone. The final part works from within the Bible and provides historical and academic defenses for some of the Bible’s central truth claims including the existence of a historical Jesus and evidences of the resurrection.In the first two parts of On Guard, the author makes his arguments by analyzing premises that support a conclusion. While this makes perfect logical sense, everyday people tend not to converse this way so a reader may afterwards find themselves unloading the arguments and breaking them down in more relatable ways. In a more formal academic debate, however, the way these arguments are presented may work perfectly. And from a personal standpoint, in a few instances the author will veer off into theology and make some claims that are debatable. Neither of these reservations take away from the power of the central thrust of the book.Christians need at a minimum a clear and systematic way to defend and articulate what they believe and why. On Guard is not a one-stop solution but is a legitimate first step in the process that will equip you with the tools you need to engage in an informed, intelligent debate.

In general, I love Moon Handbooks. I have 20 of them on the shelf in front of me, and there are probably more scattered around the house. For interesting natural features, or what to see when driving from place to place or in a town or city, they can't be beat. This 7th edition (2016) of the Idaho Handbook falls seriously short.I have the 6th edition of this Handbook (2011) by the same author, and it served me well on a trip in 2014 that included Idaho. Since I will be back in Idaho in summer 2016, this updated 7th edition seemed like the perfect thing. Until I started comparing the 2011 and 2016 editions. The main points of interest are still included of course, but you can find all those with a 10 minute search on Google. Many of the interesting out-of-mainstream things have disappeared in the new edition.For example, the 2011 version has 2-pages devoted to the 1976 Teton Dam failure -- where an almost-full reservoir caused the total failure of a dam, and the subsequent flood killed numerous people and caused $1 billion in damage. It included directions to the remnants of the old dam -- which I drove to and found fascinating. It also included directions to the Teton Dam Flood Museum in Rexburg, one of the towns hit by the flood. Well, there's no trace of any of that in the 2016 edition.Or how about the Borah Peak earthquake, the 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 1983 that is the largest earthquake ever recorded in Idaho? The 2011 Handbook tells you about the quake, and the roadside turnout with interpretive signs, plus the 21-mile long scarp there where you can still see the vertical rupture, anywhere from a few feet to as much as 14 feet high. No mention of any of this in the 2016 guide.Or how about something simple, like the Thousand Springs near Hagerman, where roughly a thousand springs emerge through the basalt cliffs? In the 2011 handbook, the index at the end of the book correctly references places of interest for these features as Thousand Springs Scenic Byway, and Thousand Springs State Park. But in the updated 2016 edition, the index now lists these as Thousand "Islands" Scenic Byway, and Thousand "Islands" State Park.... good grief, how do you edit away what you had correct, and replace these with new incorrect references???The 2016 7th edition has 447 pages, the older 2011 6th edition had 495 pages. I'm concerned that by reducing the 7th edition by 50 pages they might have gotten rid of the stuff that made Moon handbooks special. Nowadays there are so many online hotel/restaurant reviews, I would much rather see Moon get rid of the sections on accommodation and dining, and instead focus on unique places that a visitor might not be aware of through a typical online search.All in all... I still like Moon handbooks, hey, I have at least 20 of them. But I really did find this Idaho 7th edition a disappointment, and a let-down from the previous 2011 version.

The book starts out explaining a bit about the diet and the benefits and things then move on to the recipes. The types of dishes are grouped nicely into each chapter - breakfasts, snacks, appetizers, salads, soups, then the different types of meats each have their own chapter, and don't forget about the desserts at the end. The pictures are large and done well and I appreciated the nutritional information included with the recipes.

There are also good recipes in this book. Most of the recipes I wanted to check in practice, and I can say that this is the best thing I did, everything turned out very tasty. It is easy to read books with great ideas about being very easy! The title of this book is 'American Dinner Cookbook'. I had hoped more history on some diners that came from this recipe, but I would not have kept it against. It's a cookbook, plain and simple. Brother Yun's The Heavenly Man is a remarkable testimony of his life as a Christian evangelist in the People's Republic of China from the time of his personal commitment to Christ at the age of 16 (1974) through to his remarkable escape and reunion with his family in Germany in 2001. Along the way we witness the wonderful "religious freedom" of Communist China and tender mercies of atheistic Communism towards uncompromising believers in Jesus Christ. Truly the persecuted Church of China has been watered by the seeds of its martyrs (yet revival continues in China while foolish Western Christians rush headlong into secular socialism like lambs to the slaughter). Brother Yun's book is a remarkable series of adventures in the Holy Spirit. Sometimes mind-boggling, often suspenseful, and frequently heart-wrenching, The Heavenly Man is just the kind of book smug, self-reliant Western Christians need to read to consider their own ways. What I like about this book is that despite the truly remarkable miracle testimonies recorded here, Yun also includes a great amount of introspection and soul-searching over his own ministry failures, missteps and stubborn self-will. The Chinese Church is not perfect nor are its leaders. Brother Yun is not afraid to acknowledge the mistakes in his own life. Paul Hattaway, the co-author and an expert on the Chinese Church, has done a remarkable job meticulously verifying the sometimes unbelievable aspects of Brother Yun's story. And while many of the testimonies seem too fantastic to believe, I found his life to be no more fantastic than the lives of the Bible saints all Christians are supposed to accept at face value. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And Jesus said we would do "greater works than these" (His own) so why are the miracles in this book so hard for some to accept? As a Pentecostal/Full-Gospel believer with much experience in overseas evangelism, I found the wonderful miracles of Brother Yun's life to be what you would expect from a body of believers who have had to rely entirely on God's provision in the face of relentless poverty and persecution (something Western Christians can barely imagine). And Yun's most radical miracle testimony, the 74-day fast that strengthened his Christian resolve in China's most notorious prison, which many argue is medically impossible, is actually no more radical than what I have read in various survival and prisoner of war books. Except that Yun fasted in the power of the Holy Spirit! A Chinese writer living in Germany and a Chinese House leader from another group outside Yun's own network have been among his most vocal critics -- despite the overwhelming testimonies of hundreds of others who have known Yun for decades. That kind of slanderous criticism only helps me realize that even among the "saintly martyrs" of the persecuted church there will always be those who say "I am of Paul" or "I am of Apollos." Fine. But don't let the rantings of a few self-appointed online critics keep you from reading this stirring, well-written book. Brother Yun's current venture in support of the Back to Jerusalem campaign is particularly exciting as my research suggests this idea arose simultaneously in the hearts of many Christians throughout the global church, a miracle that could only be attributed to the work of the Holy Spirit. This book is one of the best I have read all year and is highly recommended.

This is true Christianity in action the way God intended. Anyone living in a country with the freedom to choose religion has no idea what persecution means or how to live by true faith the way this man from China does! I was humbled and moved by the unshakable depth of Brother Yun's faith despite countless beatings, imprisonment, and even the discipline of His loving Father God! Yun lives the life of Paul, focused on obeying each and every word that God said in the scriptures as well as what He says now through His Holy Spirit. The Heavenly Man is a must-read for anyone who thinks they know how Jesus called us to live, and it will convict you if you allow it to challenge your thinking and way of life.

The Heavenly Man was recommended to me by visitors to our church. This is a fantastic book chronicling the conversion and ministry of Brother Yun (Liu Zhenying) as an evangelist and leader in the Chinese underground church. Incredible story of faith and perseverance in the face of hardship and brutal torture at the hands of the Chinese Public Security Bureau in his resistance to joining the state approved church. This book is about authentic, unregistered Christianity, something we do not see much of in the United States as the the evangelical church has largely been nationalized and politicized, and incorporated into the state. A few quotes:"The true church is not an organization controlled by the rules of men but a holy collection of living stones with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone.""We believe that Jesus is the head of the church, not the government."This book will inspire like no other, save the Bible itself.

This reads like a suspense novel. God is good and living His way is an adventure, but what this man wentthrough and how God showed up read like the Book of Acts ! Truly an encouragement, this sets a fireunder any type of complacency ! Also,to show us, we just need to make the first more and God is there !I was privileged to see Brother Yun speak in person. This humble man, in broken English brought such ananointing into the room, I fell to my knees and wept !Every one should read this book. Also pray the US doesn't come to the point of one world religion !

I love this book. It's such a good glimpse into the lives of Christians in China during the 50s and the horrible persecution they faced. As an autobiography, the book includes most of Yun's life, but focuses primarily on his experiences as a Christian--ranging from pastoring house churches, speaking, teaching, burnout, being beaten, running from authorities, his experiences in jail and having a family. You get a graphic picture of what Jesus means when He says, "Take up your cross and follow Me." While none of us may go through the exact trials and pressures Brother Yun and those with him faced (even in China, things haven gotten somewhat better), experiencing his testimony can inspire us in the States (and elsewhere) to live with the freedom and boldness Jesus calls us to.Another book that goes good with this is These Are The Generations, a book written by a North Korean Christian family about their experiences of their family through three generations. It's similar to this book, but also very different. If Christianity in other countries is something you're interested in, definitely check this book out too. I read this book in about 1 week. Then I gave it away, bought another, gave that one away, lent my Dad's copy out, and bought this one to read again later... or give away again.This book will humble you and make you realize what you complain about is weak sauce. I am humbled and challenged every time I am reminded of an aspect of Brother Yun's story. This book pushes me to a place of prayer for the underground church, study of God's word, and gratitude.
