Book starts off a little bit rough. But after the 15th page or so it really picks up and becomes an exciting story with a Main Character who does not make beginner mistakes and actually acts like a veteran gamer would if he appeared in a LitRPG world.

For the too-sensitive reviewer who gave a one star rating after 3% of the book and bailed-for shame. For everybody else, if you like engaging, LITRPG-style action that leaves you on the edge of your seat and panting for more, then read this book. What the bad reviewer failed to realize is this book is all about a main character who sees everybody as equals, no matter what society thinks. He does collect a group of devoted females eager to bear his offspring, mainly because almost all the males in their community have been killed at the wall. As for the demi-humans, they seek advancement for their children and mating with the Shielder offers that opportunity. What makes Paul so successful is while he can be a stone-cold killer at times, he also sees people where others see monsters. Student/Nyssa is a perfect example, and I don't want to give any spoilers. As for other males. I thought Lieutenant Chen makes for a great supporting character and is in no way inferior to Paul. Paul Walsh simply has the ability to travel through the wall to fight the "monsters" on the other side, but trust me, he's got to deal with plenty of monsters on his own side, and Chen makes for one of the better trainers for Paul, both martial and otherwise. For the record, I've never met the author, don't owe him any favors, and honestly, I've not even sure how to pronounce his name. However, I AM eager to read the next book in this series, and believe me, I read a ton in this genre. Beyond the Wall just broke into my personal Top Ten list. Congratz, as I understand the gamers like to say.

So I only got 3 pages in. The main reason is it was already screaming “mc shows up to save the hapless villagers from themselves.” Then the author introduces the town and villagers as Japanese, and the only other male characters introduced at this point are all short presumably Asian men almost a foot shorter than the white protagonist. Maybe I’m overly sensitive here and reading too much into some minor things, but I honestly don’t want to read a story about someone fantasizing about saving a bunch of Asian women because the white man is strong and the Asian men are weak.So.... new record for how far into a book I got before deciding it wasn’t for me.

Yep. Snotlings. 😱 Almost too perfect.Ditto the good things already said. Boo hiss on the ridiculous 1-star review from the guy that brags he didn't even read the book and then pretty much gets it all wrong.I had a thoroughly good time reading this. Well written (a few wording glitches) with a storyline that holds your interest. The author managed to get creative with the portal LitRPG expected tropes. The wall generation and the leveling mechanics were totally new to me. The bosses and those fights were way cool. If there's gonna be a harem, might as well get right to it? And then there's the snotlings... 😸Ooh... Reclamation... 😽I almost took off a star for the lack of chapter links in the side panel and the absence of author profile info in the book description. But... The book is really fun and those things can be corrected.

The good: the action is fantastic, and the author does a good job of making us care about the MC. While this is a portal book, that element is never fully explored and instead we start with harem right away. While there is a harem element here it is very light, and after the opening scenes it never really re-enters the picture.Action is what this story is about. Once it starts, it never really lets up. We have essentially two stories, one on the monster side of the wall and one on the normal side of the wall. Both are interesting and have action, but I found the monster side much more interesting as the story develops. The normal side is more of a placeholder for future books I think. The monsters are inventively named even if they are mostly the usual selection you see in fantasy. The RPG elements are consistent although not crunchy. This is bordering on gamelit more than LitRPG I think, although that doesn't take anything away from the book. Just go in knowing that you won't see notifications every few pages. Most of the numbers tend to show up after battles. There is character leveling, and while the MC is strong he isn't overpowered. The bad: this book desperately needs an editor. Misspelled words, broken sentences, and other oddities took me out of the story. It gets better past the 50% mark but is still there. I would recommend the author get an editor for book 2 if possible.Overall this is an interesting read from an Australian author. I plan on reading book 2. 3.5/5*
