Very helpful in planning our trip to Paris. Maps are good. I would update to tell vacationers to be sure to keep their metro tickets when leaving. We did. We kept our new and used separate but still got stooped at a security check and charged two 33€ fines saying they weren't valid. We each had 3 tickets for the day and they "scanned" them(or should I say "scammed")saying they were all "new".
We are returning to Europe for the 7th year in a row. We have never paid a Travel Agent to book travel or organize a trip. Rick Steve's IS the only resource that you need. Buy a guide for each city that you will visit. Go to his website or your local PBS station for videos on where you plan to visit. Plan your own trip. Eliminate wasting time on things your don't care about seeing (like every guided tour). Don't spend all your time traveling with the same group. Get out and meet the PEOPLE. As Rick says, "It is the best diplomacy for our country and who we really are as a people"
Loved this entire book. It was a godsend in Paris where I, a 71 year old woman, used it to find my way around and see the sights for a week in Paris by myself. Clear, easy to understand and pointed me in the direction of what I wanted to see there without a bunch of stuff to blindly choose from. I used it well. The only thing I didn't care for was the tour of the one art museum. I used the tour of the Louvre and it was perfect. I saw exactly what I wanted in the three hours I was there. But tried to use his tour in the Musee d/Orsay and it led me back and forth in jumps that didn't make sense and then I missed a lot of what I would have liked to see between jumps. Went back the next day and toured by myself very nicely. All in all though the best Paris guide book I have seen.
I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to offer my two cents for this great little guide. Outside of the fact that it's nice and compact, it offers a distillation of the basics. It makes Paris a lot less overwhelming for a first time (or even second time in my case) visitor. But the thing that made this book especially useful was the tours. My friend and I did the book's tours for the Louvre, the Orsay, the Eiffel Tower, and Versailles, and in all cases they were excellent. Full of interesting information and observations that gave you the context needed to make the sights more meaningful. In the case of the Louvre and Versailles, we did the local tours as well, but found Rick's to be much better.
I'm one of those people who obsessively research for trips and usually buy multiple different types of guidebooks just to make sure I get all the information and I don't miss anything. The last time I traveled to Europe (month long trip), I purchased Fodors, Lonely Planet and Rick Steves' guides for the few places I'd been to. I will say without a doubt, that the Rick Steves was by far the most comprehensive, user friendly and most useful by far. Every restaurant I tried from his recommended list was amazing and I really enjoyed all the tips he had about avoiding lines, how to purchase metro passes and other logistics in the most money and time-saving manner possible, along with historical details or fun facts. This Paris guide is no different. Again he has great comprehensive information about a variety of areas, covering multiple interests and budgets. His guidebooks tend to be more informative rather than just a seeming telephone book of hotels and restaurants with phone numbers and times (though he does have a good list of those for each area). He has a lot of self-guided walks through Paris as well, which I found to be really helpful the last time I was there (and way cheaper than taking an expensive tour!). Overall, I'm very pleased with the quality and detail of his books and am very much looking forward to my next trip to Paris this winter!
My own addendum to visiting Paris is:1. Definitely plan your trip for “shoulder†or off-season. See #2 below.2. The Musee Pass will get you past long lines and works as a discount if you see LOTS of the covered institutions. BUT, once you initiate it you are under pressure to march through Paris at a run every day or else waste money you’ve spent on the passes. This can be exhausting and antithetical to a relaxing vacation. If you avoid heavy tourist season traffic the lines aren’t that long anyway ( we were there for two weeks, September ~ October). The passes saved us a few minutes only, even at the Louvre, and put us under some pressure to keep moving when we’d rather have kicked back at a cafe and relaxed, like you’re supposed to in Paris.3. If you have asthma or are sensitive to cigarette smoke, take a table at the back of the restaurant. Smoking is no longer allowed inside but people sit outside right next to the door. Get as far away as you can.
I used this book when I went to Paris in January 2013. There is a section on transfers to and from CDG. If you use the one company you will get a discount of 10%.. The hotel, food, walking tours descriptions seemed to be accurate., but if you are taking your phone, don't rely on this book to help you with instruction on getting and installing a SIM card, check with your phone provider and get your phone unlocked. It is very complicated.I have used metro pass and the museum pass in the past and the book does tell you it is more cost effective to by the book of carnets for the metro and if you are concentrating on one or two museums, it does not pay to buy the pass.. It is true. The tips in the book helped me save money. The money I saved more than paid for the book.I would recommend the book for travelers to Paris. When I came home I donated it to my local library so other may use the book.
