The name Vengeance Road for me brings a lot of images to mind and many interesting possibilities. One cannot say what it might mean to any individual, but the genre of revenge tales is certainly a fun one. When I considered where this book could go and what the summary had to say it made me really want to give it a try. Whenever I write a review my focus is explaining the why behind my reasoning so you can decide for yourself if you want to read a book. So with that in mind, here is my review of Vengeance Road.Books like the Conte of Monte Cristo and True Grit come to mind when considering the genre of revenge stories. At least as far as True Grit is concerned, I think this was intention on the author’s part and maybe so with Monte Cristo as well. The gist of It is that revenge stories are often about the descent into becoming the very thing that you are trying to get revenge against or maintaining humanity. Despite the formula being so well known, there is a lot to be said in the execution and the details to determine if a revenge book is good or not. There will be some minor spoiler potential below this point, be warned.Despite being a western, this book is a young adult genre revenge tale. This fact is hinted by the summary which talks about the Colton brothers whom trail the lead character. Will there be romance? There will. This is also one of the worst parts of this book. This adds in addition to the standard revenge story questions, now there is also a will they or won’t they plot and the necessary chemistry writing that goes along with it. For there to be revenge there must also be loss and thus grief, but on top of all of that there is also a mystery plotline going on. If this is starting to sound a bit crowded that’s because it is very crowded and not long enough to do justice to each element.With the revenge plot we end up with a lot more lip service paid to the collateral damage and descent into madness than actual descent. Some people do get hurt, but it is very debatable how much of that was caused by the revenge and how much by the bad guys being bad guys. While there is some regretful actions the lead will dwell on, there is never really a point where she starts to sacrifice her humanity for revenge. There was a great opportunity to do this, what with the supporting characters, but because the book ultimately wants a romantic pay off, this whole sub plot never comes to fruition. Basically our author never seems to have the will to pull the trigger on making our lead actually do anything that isn’t entirely justifiable. This fact greatly detracts from a good revenge tale. Sure True Grit never really goes into the descent into madness prospective, but there is a lot more loaner attitude actually portrayed in that story and it focuses much more squarely on the material it means to portray.Now romance is almost never my thing, but bad romance especially turns me off. In Vengeance Road I can’t help but feel the romance was more of a getting a fix, rather than an actual display of good writing. The book just isn’t long enough to merit the level of character building necessary to build a stable foundation for love. There was never a point where I thought the characters had romantic chemistry or any real reason for feeling for one another, in fact they hardly know each other, a point which the book even has them state repeatedly. The physical descriptions of attraction are extremely blunt and over done in this book, considering I’m a human being and I’ve been in relationships and would probably never of described it the way this book does with the frequency nor the depth. It just feels out of place. Worse yet, the romance is done in spite of real grief, which at times, should entirely over power feelings of interest. Given that one such time of grief ends in a kiss I can’t help but feel it cheapens the grief narrative or cancels it out entirely for the hook up narrative. Like the grief exists purely as a driver for romance, rather than the main focus. I can’t stress enough how much I felt this was to the book’s detriment.There is also a mystery which the book eludes to for almost the entire story. Is the father a good or bad guy, what is his history. . ect. Well eventually we get some answers, but they’re very unsatisfying as they do not match at all to the hints being given up till the end. Maybe the author had different plans early on during writing that changed near the end, but whatever the reason I found the mystery story line to be very disappointing. A good mystery, in my opinion, is one you as the reader can solve on your own, but don’t bother with this book, the clues are not as good as the narrative pretends. You cannot possibly solve this and nor should you try. The mystery just ultimately distracts from the story.Most of my review has been on the negative and there is a reason for that. This book presents a large missed opportunity. It would be a good western if the excess material were just trimmed a bit, but instead it ends up being a very mediocre book. The promise of a revenge story is never really fully realized because too much of what makes a good revenge story is watered down for the romance plot, and both the romance plot and revenge plot have to give up further room for a mystery that never really pays off. It isn’t a bad book per say, the voicing and the immersion are both very solid, but it could have been better. I would of personally preferred if the author had stuck closer to the revenge story and not followed a formulaic and bad romance like oh so many young adult novels seem to these days. I won’t say if this book is for you or not, I felt it a decent western and okay revenge story, but if you’re strapped for time don’t let the promising title fool you.Please feel free to comment, I’m happy to enter into discussion about my reviews.

Truthfully, I’m not a tremendous fan of western films, but they tend to follow such specific atmospheric guidelines that I couldn’t have imagined a book executing those same feelings. I was wrong, though; Vengeance Roadliterally feels like you’ve been transported into a western, from the setting all the way to the manner of speaking the narrator takes on (both in spoken word and her inner monologues).Essentially, Vengeance Road is a story of vengeance; when Kate comes home and finds her beloved father hanged and her home burned to the ground, she chooses to dress up like a young man and ride off after the gang of rough riders responsible for this crime.→ what I liked ←“The frontier ain’t for the faint of heart, and it certainly ain’t kind to women. Sometimes I think the whole world’s ‘gainst us.”Kate is a fantastically likable narrator. She’s stubborn, heartbroken, and downright pissed off, and nothing’s getting in the way of that. Even when she starts to develop feelings for Jesse, one of the brothers she reluctantly travels with, she refuses to let those emotions hinder her even for a moment.Jesse and Will, the two brothers Kate travels with, are also a really enjoyable duo; they bicker like siblings, but there’s no doubting their love for one another, even when one of them inevitably falls into a rant about the other one’s idiocy or quirks. On top of that, when they choose to ride with Kate, not knowing she’s a young woman, it’s made evident that their offer is based on a feeling of moral requirement – not just taking care of her because she’s a girl. Even once the truth is revealed, I never felt like Jesse or Will looked at Kate any differently for her gender – a surprisingly feminist view for a couple of late 1800s teen boys to hold.The action scenes are remarkably well-paced and easy to follow. I find that fight scenes are hit and miss for me in books, but Erin Bowman does a pretty fine job of playing them out for you.→ what I disliked ←“Gold makes monsters of men.”Despite this being a really fun story, I don’t feel like I ever fully connected with the characters! It was hard for me to feel much emotion for any of them, even when terrible, dramatic things happened. (I really hoped the second book would give me the chance to attach further to them, but the second book is a companion with different characters.)In the beginning of the book, it’s established that everyone (including the narrator) is incredibly prejudiced against the Apache people of the area; in several instances, Kate mentions how terrified of them she is, and essentially plays into the “savages” trope. While she does end up progressing really solidly in this aspect, I almost felt like it was played up a little too much, and it admittedly made me a bit uncomfortable a time or two.→ final thoughts ←While Vengeance Road certainly wasn’t perfect, it was a really fun read in a genre I’d never reached before, and I will be continuing the series for sure.

This one could easily be a movie of the Western genre, with its shoot-outs, twists, and dialogue. The entire book is narrated in a rough dialect that I struggled with (as a grammar nerd) and didn't enjoy. I was able to ignore it after awhile, much like I could with Scarlet's dialect in A.C. Gaughen's retelling of Robin Hood.Kate Thompson is spunky and unapologetic and authentic. Nothing about her felt forced. Will and Jesse were great, too. Lil, the Apache girl, felt a bit stereotypical at times but she gained some depth after a big incident (that I will not spoil, so don't ask).I'm not quite sure what I was expecting to happen in this book, but Vengeance Road definitely took me by surprise. I hate "journey" books (most end up being pretty boring), but this one wasn't about the journey or focused only on the trip. Enough happened at various intervals to keep me entertained and enjoying the plot. There is a plot twist about 85% in that I didn't like. It worked in some ways, but I felt pretty meh about it.The romance was pretty much expected, but it was still pretty swoony. A lot of it was what I wanted from the romance in Under a Painted Sky (meaning it develops a little sooner and there are plenty of swoonworthy kisses).There's some foul language and a lot of violence.The Verdict: So great! I wasn't expecting to love such a straight Western, but I did! So if you enjoy historical fiction, this is definitely one you should try.
