I am so happy that the author's widow decided to reprint this book and make it available to all of us. If she hadn't Tony A's work would have been lost to everyone. When these original steps were replaced with the original AA steps, it made the whole process very choppy. To help somebody tear the bandaid off of some terrible memory of abuse and then ask them to take a moral inventory and make amends, as is required by the AA 12 steps, turns it into a cross-examination in a rape case. With this book, the feel and intention is very clear and suppportive.
After decades of therapy, I found ACA and it has changed my life in less than a year. This book is a great asset along with the Big Red Book of ACA and their yellow 12-Step Workbook.
I'm so happy that this book is now available at a reasonable price on Kindle. To give you a taste, here are the firs few of Tony A's steps:1. We admitted we were powerless over the effects of living with alcoholism and that our lives had become unmanageable.2. We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could bring us clarity.3. We made a decision to practice self-love and to trust in a Higher Power of our understanding.4. We made a searching and blameless inventory of our parents because, in essence, we had become them.5. We admitted to our Higher Power, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our childhood abandonment.6. We were entirely ready to begin the healing process with the aid of our Higher Power....
I'd heard a bit of Tony A's story from the history in the beginning chapters of ACA's "Big Red Book." This book gives more intimacy and detail as well as different aspects and perspectives on recovery. One suggestion is about one's perspective of one's home group, and excellent suggested guidelines for journaling. Just finished the read---now time to re-read!
I think it is interesting that founder Tony A. desired a softer set of steps than those that were adopted by ACA. This is a good book that describes how ACA was created and what ACA is.For anyone new to ACA, be aware that the steps presented in this book are different than those in the yellow workbook or the red book, but these concepts are equally as important.For those with more ACA exposure, this is a very good book and gives more ideas about how to work the program.
I am so grateful to have been told about the existence of this book. Thank you for allowing it to be purchased via kindle. Just reading the table of contents gives me hope and peace. The 12 steps presented in this book speak to my heart. Thank you...thank you.
Absolutely the most validating resource available to children of alcoholics and dysfunctional families. It’s long out of print but the Kindle version is great. Reading this is an uplifting and validating experience second to none. Highly recommended for ages 13 to 103. You won’t regret it.
Helpful book. Painful book. I wouldn't say "I love it." However, it does deserve five stars.
