The Maps of First Bull Run: An Atlas of the First Bull Run (Manassas) Campaign, including the Battle of Ball's Bluff, June-October 1861 (American Battle Series), by Bradley M. Gottfried

Review

"Brad Gottfried’s The Maps of First Bull Run is a solid follow-up to his The Maps of Gettysburg. The maps are very user-friendly, easily readable, and highly detailed without being the least bit confusing, and there are enough of them to give a complete picture of the course of the action. Combine each full-page map with the facing text, and this book provides readers with a good understanding of much of the action in the Eastern Theater during the first year of the war." (James A. Morgan, III, author of A Little Short of Boats: The Fights at Ball’s Bluff and Edward’s Ferry, October 21-22, 1861)"Brad Gottfried’s The Maps of First Bull Run is filled with full-page maps and accompanying facing text that will help make sense of the confusing series of events for Bull Run/Manassas neophytes and old hands alike. I highly recommend it." (Harry Smeltzer, host of the Civil War blog Bull Runnings)

Very disappointed that this Kindle version does not have full page maps. I own several Kindle Gottfried books as well as the hard copy for each.Kindle Maps of Bull Run is the only one with miniature maps. The maps in the hard copy of Maps of Bull Run are full page. Why can't Kindle update this to the latest Kindle technology so that the maps are full page?the Maps are less 1/2 page size.

I used this book to help follow the action while reading four books on the campaign and battle of First Manassas/Bull Run and two books on the raid/battle of Ball's Bluff and it made a big difference in my ability to keep up with the text since none of the books on these military actions have enough maps!(Morgan's book on Ball's Bluff had the best battle maps but "The Maps Of First Bull Run" did a great job showing the situation in Northern Virginia in late 1861 and the Union Army of the Potomac's movements prior to the battle. Plus, the battlefield situation at Ball's Bluff and Edwards Ferry is enlarged and colorized, making the action easier to follow)First, here are the books I read on the subjects covered by the maps in this volume:1. The First Battle of Manassas by John Hennessy2. A Single Grand Victory by Ethan S. Rafuse3. Battle at Bull Run by William C. Davis4. Donnybrook by David Detzer5. A Little Short of Boats by James A. Morgan III6. Ball's Bluff by Byron FarwellAll of these books were a good source to learn about the campaign and battle of First Manassas/Bull Run and Ball's Bluff but by using "The Maps of First Bull Run" I feel my ability to follow the armies movements leading upto the clash of arms and the complicated maneuvers and fighting on these battlefields was greatly enhanced. The book uses a format where the map is on the right hand page and the text describing the actions on that map are located on the left hand page so there is no flipping back and forth through the book looking for the appropriate map to follow the course of events. The maps show all the terrain types (including elevations unlike many military history books) needed to help the reader picture what the armies saw and understand how their decisions were influenced by the lay of the land. Units are shown as brigades, regiments, battalions, companies, batteries, and sections. There are 51 maps total. The first ten maps detail the situation in the Northern Virginia/Shenandoah Valley theater of operations, the movements of both sides to the banks of Bull Run and the movements in the Valley including Confederate General Joe Johnston's evasion of Union General Patterson's forces to reinforce Beauregard at Manassas, the Battle of Blackburn's Ford 18 July, 1861, and McDowell's planning of the battle 19 and 20 July, 1861. The next 27 maps show the Battle of First Manassas/Bull Run from the Union flanking march to the Federal forces rout and retreat to Washington. The last 14 maps cover the time period after the battle and upto the action at Ball's Bluff October 21, 1861 and its aftermath. Appendix 1 gives an Order of Battle for both sides with losses at First Manassas/Bull Run, Appendix 2 gives the same for Ball's Bluff, followed by a nice section of Notes for each map, a decent Bibliography, and Index. The maps and text are great. If you want to better understand these early battles in Virginia, "The Maps of First Bull Run" is a great help for a Civil War buff, or just a casual reader of history. Highly recommended.

Well done, be a nice addition to your civil war library

written by a college I attended, president

If you want the detail as to where and when each unit of both armies were during the battle, this book is for you. I keep waiting for more of this series.

I purchased this book as background research for my series of novels about the Marines in the Civil War (The Forgotten Marines). I am very pleased with the content.

this is the book i've always looked for! nleflhwefjkhefwjhk q3rijokjwfjkji3qij3 ijfjiow 3ji jiodo j3 fwojfwjo wjk3jnjjio fewj jqdjfe jqdjkl jfjl

I found the maps of Balls Bluff particularly useful in figuring out what happened at the obscure but complex early Civil War Battle. A job well done and I recommend it.

From the Inside Flap

Lily is haunted by memories-of who she once was, and of a person, long gone, who defined her existence. She has nothing but time now, as she recounts the tale of Snow Flower, and asks the gods for forgiveness. In nineteenth-century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu ("women's writing"). Some girls were paired with laotongs, "old sames," in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. With the arrival of a silk fan on which Snow Flower has composed for Lily a poem of introduction in nu shu, their friendship is sealed and they become "old sames" at the tender age of seven. As the years pass, through famine and rebellion, they reflect upon their arranged marriages, loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their lifelong friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a brilliantly realistic journey back to an era of Chinese history that is as deeply moving as it is sorrowful. With the period detail and deep resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha, this lyrical and emotionally charged novel delves into one of the most mysterious of human relationships: female friendship.

I had previously read Lisa See’s novel and of course loved it. Her writing and insight into an obscure culture absolutely transport you away from your life and into another. It is that kind of book I will always treasure for the journey and learning it brings.Recently, I purchased the kindle version of the book even though I own the paperback simply because I didn’t wanted to read it again and after Kindle it’s hard to go back. I deeply urge you to purchase the Kindle version because it features the explanations of many different new-to-us traditions and subtext accessible by a mere poke onto the blue text, reading even further into the fascinating subtext, then poking the blue text right back out into the story like so many books that might feature footnotes. These “footnotes” have further increased the enjoyment of this book for me easily 10 fold and I am early on. If you want to read it, this is the way.

I love Lisa See as an author! She has such a way with words and I love the way she can make you fall into the book so easily. I learned a lot from reading this book about the ancient Chinese customs—foot binding for women, secret writings women shared, the treatment of women in terms of their worth and much more. I cringed when See described the “foot binding” practice, as she made it seem so vivid. I ached for the women’s friendship when there were misunderstandings. I sobbed for their losses. This was a beautifully written novel and a great story. I really liked it. When a story can move me to tears in more than one place, the author has done a perfect job of writing!

I LOVED Snow Flower and the Secret Fan! It was sad, yet fulfilling, true and honest, yet fictional. A truly moving story about the hardships of being a woman in nineteenth-century China. Yes, foot binding too.In nineteenth century China, a girl from a poor family is paired into a lifelong female friendship match with a girl from a family of a higher social standing. So her life begins, and we learn about it through her own eyes, as she is growing up. Not only does Snow Flower and the Secret Fan extensively cover the woman’s place and life in pre-modern China, but it’s also a tale about sisterhood, trust and empathy, as well as just being a good human being, no matter what your circumstances are — or failing to be one. This book includes a lot of detail on Chinese customs, especially regarding women’s life and circumstances, and the main premise also hangs on the concept of nu shu, a somewhat secret writing system that the Chinese women taught from generation to generation, as they were forbidden to learn men’s writing and had no other means to communicate with the families they were forced to leave behind when they married.

I had a delightful time reading this book about two young Chinese girls who swore their allegiance to each other when they were very young. This book follows their lives as they marry, have children- but in very different circumstances. One girl lives in poverty and one in wealth. I believe most women would greatly enjoy reading this book who love to learn and enjoy finding out about the history and cultural differences between their nation and that of. China

The story takes place in the early 1800s and focuses on the relationship of Lily, a farmer's daughter, and Snow Flower, whose family was wealthy. I was fascinated by the history of women and the culture of the time, such as the painful foot binding and nu shu, the private women's language. The story focuses on the relationship of the two girls that continues on through womanhood. I enjoyed the story itself, but felt the last part of the book was rushed. Too many decades were condensed into too few pages. The author's note at the end is very interesting and I appreciated the novel more after reading about her research.

Snow Flower and Lily stepped out of the pages of this book and into my heart. See created an entire lifetime of a woman's experience in ancient Asia and beautifully crafted her character in a way that made Lily's climb from oppression to honor realistically come to life for me, a large-boned, large-footed Caucasian with "feet that flap like fish." The story explores Lily's relationship with her matched friend Snow Flower from the time they were small girls through their feet binding years, their marriages and child bearing times, to misunderstandings and the bitter fruits of regret. Through See's pen, the reader steps into a world far removed from the Western world of today. It is very well researched and craftily written to reveal a history long hidden from Western eyes. I would recommend it for 16 and older. There were some themes explored that were uncomfortable for me, including physical abuse, customs such as foot binding and oppression of women, along with violence of nature and of war, but it was penned through the first person view of Lily's quill in such a way as to not be sensationalized but simply a representation of the lives of women in this place in historical remote China.

I found this book extremely interesting. It handles the harsh relationships that maybe develop between mother and daughter well as they clash with society's expectations. It can be tough to swallow at times because girls vs boys are considered a burden and of little value. At the same time it is educational about the world in China during that time period. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and became completey engrossed in each female characters dilemna.

#95,275 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This graphic novel adheres VERY closely to Ellison's original script -- which can be found in paperback, here on Amazon, with a long and fascinating essay ("Perils of the City") that reveals who wrote what (Ellison wrote the original treatments and script, and first revision) and when (three others, none of them Roddenberry) -- and everyone does a bang-up job with the adaptation. The writing/adaptation by the Tiptons is terrific. The standard covers, for each of the five original issues, by Ortiz -- especially the cover for issue #1, which graces this graphic novel collection -- are as funky and fun and as art deco as ever (and they are included herein, as are the "special covers" by Paul Shipper, featuring paintings of Trek characters from the classic TV show). Woodward's Illustrations inside are sublime. He even includes "Easter Eggs" for his friends and, when he began to loosen up by issue or part 3, after getting positive feedback from Ellison himself, tosses in "Ellison eggs" (references to some of Ellison's short stories in the form of signs and writing and graffiti, and at least one illustration of what looks like Blood as he appeared in the '74 movie adaptation of "A Boy and his Dog"). Even Harlan's visage makes an appearance, when a certain WWI vet rolls onto the stage.Bonuses with the hardcover include a new intro and afterword by Harlan Ellison as well as copious artist notes from JK Woodward, regarding his method of working -- interesting even to those not inclined to draw or paint -- as well as about the series itself (pointing out the various "eggs", and methods he used to illustrate various scenes, including one that involves an electric toothbrush that made me fall off my seat).Yeah, the revised ending -- AKA the televised version -- had its moments, and yeah the ending there worked quite well on a visceral level. But the original ending, as well as an in-depth discussion between Kirk and Spock about love, the broaching of racism and xenophobia that Ellison originally wrote into the teleplay are all sorely missed. It seems that Roddenberry and his minions preferred the visceral over the intellectual. More's the pity. On the other hand, this graphic novel -- because comic books are basically storyboards with more detailed illustration and dialogue -- allows those who enjoyed "Star Trek" as well as anyone who enjoys good writing to finally have the brilliant, WGA-award winning script play out before their eyes. And they can still go back and enjoy the revised/televised version if they so choose. And, of course, the illustrations are larger in this version, since the graphic novel/book is larger than the comic format, which makes Woodward's illustrations even more beautiful to be hold. This one's a five star keeper, folks.

City on the Edge of Forever is a story at the core of the Star Trek universe, and we should be eternally grateful to Harlan Ellison for gifting it to us. Any true Star Trek fan should pick up this book. The artwork is amazing, and it offers a kind of alt-universe view of one of our favorite Trek stories. However, it is impossible to read this story without comparing it to the broadcast version, and I have to say that the televised version is superior to what is on the page here. I see two major problems with this version of the story. First, it removes McCoy as a factor in the story, instead inserting a drug dealing crew member as the one who destroys the timeline. This villain not only compromises Roddenberry's vision of an evolved, enlightened human race exploring space, it also makes evil a driving force of the story rather than fate. In my opinion, this softens the blow of the story's dramatic ending, in which Kirk has to admit that he is not stronger than fate.Second, I find the relationship between Spock and Kirk to be rather cool in this comic. That is a stark contrast to the televised story, which provides one of the best portraits of the friendship between the two men. Yes, the Ellison script has some important lines that should definitely have been included in the televised script, such as Spock acknowledging why Edith Keeler speaks to Kirk's heart in a way that a long line of women never did. Reading Ellison's version provides clarity as to why the amorous Kirk will always be haunted by the names Edith Keeler and Carol Marcus. But overall, I prefer the televised story, in which an evil villain is not at play, and Kirk and Spock strive to not only restore the timeline, but to also restore the triadic friendship by saving their desperately lost comrade, McCoy.

Consider me among the ones who feel The City on the Edge of Forever is either #1 or #2 of my all time favorite original Star Trek episodes (#1 alternates between this episode and The Doomsday Machine, which is easily the most suspenseful episode of the original -and any subsequent- series). So here's the thing: Harlan Ellison created the story and wrote the initial screenplay but changes were made to it by outside hands and the episode that eventually aired had the most of the framework of Ellison's original story as well as some prominent deviations. If you're at all familiar with Mr. Ellison, you'll know this didn't sit well with him.A number of years ago Mr. Ellison released a book which included his original screenplay and I read it but found it difficult to compare/contrast in my mind the actual episode versus Mr. Ellison's screenplay. The episode outshone the screenplay because the episode was so familiar/visual to me and it was tough to get that same "visual" experience out of reading a screenplay. This was resolved, to a great degree, by this graphic novel, which featured an adaptation of the screenplay by writers Scott and David Tipton and illustrated -quite well!- by J. K. Woodward, and it was a most curious thing! To begin with, and with all due respect to Mr. Ellison, I still feel the original episode as aired is better. The most significant differences between screenplay and aired episode -and I'll try not to be too spoilery- include the participation of Dr. McCoy (he plays a big part in the episode and doesn't appear at all in the screenplay/graphic novel), the climax involves action taken by Kirk in the episode versus Spock in the screenplay, the appearance of a crippled WWI veteran (one thing I would have really liked to see in the episode but was cut out entirely), and a cerebral conversation between Kirk and Spock in the screenplay's conclusion.Of the things listed above, inclusion of McCoy in the episode was, IMHO, a stroke of genius and allowed viewers to become more engaged in what was to happen versus the character Mr. Ellison created, a drug dealer/murderer, who sets the actions in motion. Further, I feel the climactic resolution resonates more in the episode by having Kirk act versus Spock. The result was an emotional gut punch that no other episode in the series was able to deliver. And yet, as Spock would say, it is fascinating to see the original screenplay presented in graphic form. Would a more faithful to the screenplay episode have made for a better CEF? To this reader, not quite. But having said that, if you're a fan of Star Trek and CEF in particular, do yourself a favor and give the graphic novel a look. Recommended.

I've read all of George Hodel's books over the years. What he wrote in the first turned out to be true. People were skeptical at first, but facts have come out that show it's not just likely, more like obvious, if you follow how Hodel has put all his ducks in a row.I was skeptical about this book. The Chicago and Manila murders seemed likely. But not Zodiac. But just like he did with the first book, he keeps layering facts. He's come out with another book, with additional evidence and there is new info on his website--layer after layer. So skeptical or not, I have to say that Hodel is building another solid case. It must be a bit difficult for him emotionally when he steps away from his roles as author and investigator. When he's back to being George Hodel's son, it must be awfully wrenching.

I'm not 100% convinced but Steve Hodel makes a good case showing the parallels between the Black Dahlia Killer and the Zodiac. As the primary witnesses age and pass on, a definitive 'he did it' is unlikely barring a DNA match that could show Dr. George Hodel was involved. I'd recommend reading Black Dahlia Avenger first to get a handle on the prime suspect. Robert Graysmith's Zodiac book gives better overall look at the evidence in that case and comes to a completely different conclusion. Graysmith had never heard of George Hodel's very real connection to the Dahlia case, as those files were sealed at that time. Had Hodel been publicly named a suspect in the Dahlia case it's very possible he would have been looked at for Zodiac as well.

Most Evil is one of my all time favorite true crime books! I was a child living in the Los Angeles area when the Black Dahlia murder occurred. I remember it being in the LA papers. When the Zodiac Killer roamed the San Francisco Bay Area, I lived in Marin County and was scared many nights when my husband was away. I have read Most Evil more than once and will probably read it again. Thank you Steve Hodel - you have a number one fan.

After thoroughly enjoying Mr. Hodel's page-turner, "Black Dahlia Avenger", I was very eager to dive into "Most Evil" and was engaged from page one of this riveting true-life thriller.Once again, Mr. Hodel affords the reader the luxurious intimacy of fly-on-the-wall status as he presents his readers with compelling facts that strongly suggest his late father, Dr. George Hodel, was indeed the infamous "Zodiac" killer. Countless photographs from the "Zodiac", "Black Dahlia" and other cases (as well as from the author's personal collection) enrich the details Mr. Hodel puts forth. We are also given a history of Dr. George Hodel's involvement with the "Black Dahlia" (Elizabeth Short) murder (which the author meticulously spells out in "Black Dahlia Avenger") in order for us to better understand his father's tie to the "Zodiac" case. This is no campfire story. Mr. Hodel (with Mr. Pezzullo) presents his case in layman's terms so the reader feels he/she is being treated to an engrossing story over a multi-course gourmet dinner and a fine wine.True crime story lovers who appreciate exhaustively-researched books will get a great deal of enjoyment from "Most Evil" (as did I). Treat yourself and make this your next purchase!

Steve Hodel makes Sherlock Holmes look like an amateur! While he has been derided for naming his father as the most notorious serial killer of the 20th Century, he has supported his investigation with unlimited circumstantial evidence and while it is "circumstantial", it is so completely explained that there is no doubt in my mind that his father, Dr. George Hill Hodel was the infamous murderer of The Black Dahlia while also being "The Lipstick Killer" ("stop me before I kill more!"), San Francisco's "Zodiak" killer and perpetrator of other unsolved killings.Though it appears on the surface to be a ridiculously fanciful thesis, Mr. Hodel, a retired homicide policeman has in my opinion, solved these crimes, tying them together with a motivational thread and accompanying the text with copious illustrations. This book is impossible to put aside.Bravo, Steve Hodel. This could not have been pleasant for you.

That's not hyperbole -- I feel he truly has. The moment I read that his father was influenced by James Joyce, the word play in the Zodiac letters came chillingly into focus. This alone, coupled with the (thankful) rarity of George Hodel's madness and the huge canvas he was painting on (which Steve Hodel has highlighted by giving us his father's aesthetic perspective) makes it highly unlikely that there could exist *two* people as crazy and brilliant as the BDA and Z. It would be easy to chalk off the correspondences he highlights as simple coincidence mistaken by pattern perception, but the background and structure behind the theories makes that assessment highly unlikely. This is a brilliant analysis. I do wonder if his father persuaded Steve to become a detective. Perhaps that is why he is Daedalus who made the flight through brilliance without his wings burning while his father (Icarus, with the father/son roles swapped) did not. George Hodel was an insane genius -- happily, his son is a sane one. That is evidenced by this book.

There's even a chart in the back showing silhouettes of famous spaceships (Tie Fighter, Cylon Raider, Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser, et cetera) in case you spot one and are wondering what it is. (Brian Lynch Georgia Straight 2014-12-25)Reference books are a tough market in the days of Google and Wikipedia, but Sci-Fi Chronicles is one worth checking out. A combination timeline and encyclopedia of the genre, it's a terrific compilation of information, lavishly illustrated and surprisingly well written. Covering fiction, film, television and video games, it's the kind of guide that invites a browsing frenzy... The coverage is excellent, ranging from the giant franchises such as Star Trek and Star Wars to entries on leading authors of the golden age. (Alex Good Toronto Star 2014-12-07)This is the kind of book that science fiction fans like myself drool over... I'm still digging through its treasures. (John DeNardo, editor of SF Signal Kirkus Reviews 2014-11-01)More than 200 influential science-fiction titles -- encompassing books, comics, magazines, television, computer games, and film -- are profiled in this chronology of the genre from its origins, in 1818, with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, to today's popular franchises like the Hunger Games and Halo. Entries range from one to six pages and feature brief narratives on the evolution of a particular title or author, a time line of publication, and a complete photo spread of titles in order of publication. As a reference source, the index provides the best access, but this book will delight science-fiction fans interested in learning more about the development of the genre, making it a great choice for the circulating collection. Very extensive and packed with info. The usual quibbles regarding what's included (separate entry for Lovecraft but not ERB) and how (chosen categories differ for some--even though I love ERB, I don't think of Tarzan as sci-fi) and accuracy (gratefully, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby each have entries, but they neglect to mention Kirby's influence on the Fantastic Four or give credit to Simon & Kirby for creation of the kid-team and romance genre in comics, etc.); and with its near comic-book size but NYC-phonebook thickness, its bulk alone may turn some off.But considering the herculean work that must've gone into it, and the book's attempt to be thorough, it's a great buy (if you can get it for half or more off cover price) just for the sheer wealth of historical and browse-worthy info. One of those tomes where anyone will find something fun/cool/unknown, and you can read as much or as little at a time as you want. Recommended for fans casual and professional.

The 576 densely packed pages of "Sci-Fi Chronicles" contain more interesting information per square inch than any other book about the genre that I've encountered in recent memory--if not ever. At the volume's bargain-basement Amazon price, the cost per useful data byte is minuscule. Why, it's practically free. Who could resist it?"Sci-Fi Chronicles" is not the type of book to sit down with and read from cover to cover. That would be a Herculean task indeed. It's more of an encyclopedia, but in the best possible way. For example, I have no use for traditional encyclopedias and their dry, boring lists of topics sparsely covered in a paragraph or two each. Rather, "Sci-Fi Chronicles" is a stand-alone, fully integrated, visually stunning, utterly fascinating repository of detailed information about the entire universe of sci-fi in all of its splendor. The magnitude of General Editor Guy Haley and the contributors' achievement amazes me every time I pick up this book and spend an hour or so just random-associating my through it. Books, authors, movies, TV shows--they're all in here, at just the right level of detail. Topics receive as much coverage as they warrant--a page, two pages, several separate sections--based on their roles and importance in the history of the genre. The approach works perfectly, in my opinion.Whatever you do, don't skim over the "How to Use This Book" section on pages 12 and 13. Read it carefully. It explains how to use the color codes, icons, notes, sidebars and timelines that appear in the book. These elements are a must for the reader to understand in order to get the most out of this superb magnum opus. Why are you still here reading this review? Incredible encyclopedia of Science Fiction! In addition to beautiful photos, and articles, there is a very cool timeline of when stories and/or movies for each franchise began and end. This is not a book you'd read in order. I found myself skipping around, looking for certain authors, etc. This is an important reference for any fan of Science Fiction that you will revisit often. I expect my copy to become 'well-loved' complete with coffee stains.

Best current SF history review and chronology I've seen. I learned a lot. Even though I have written SF, it does not mean I have read a lot. Best parts are the chronology and story evolution. Highly illustrated. It is instructive to SF writers too.

Fantastic book. Well researched, fascinating information that's beautifully presented. My Only regret is that the book isn't an online database that can be searched and extended. Highly recommended.

Awesome item; fast delivery. Thanks!

This visual tracing of the history and development of science fiction primarily from a visual standpoint is incomprehensibly comprehensive. This remarkably complete graphics and stills-enriched index of all versions of a major work, many highly obscure but deserving of attention, notes films, radio plays, TV series, video games, other games and on and on. Division into sections allows sampling reading, slowly going thru it in order, or quick reference and settling of arguments. A highly exceptional resource and a pleasure to read.

Arrived on time and product is as described.
