About the Author

Mike Mignola's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. In Lord Baltimore's world the First World War ended when a plague erupted unleashing zombies, vampires and other forgotten horrors into the ravished nations of Europe. Now with harpoons and rifles, knives and pistols, axes and sabres he destroys them one by one always hunting for the Vampire who killed his family and began the war between them and humanity.I missed the prequel book Baltimore or the Steadfast Tin Soldier but writers Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden quickly bring us up to speed without skimping on the moody atmosphere or the action. I was briefly disappointed that Mignola was not doing the art but Ben Stenbeck does an excellent job creating Baltimore's world and invoking Mignola's style without imitating it.And what a world. At first it seems to be WWI Europe but soon we see some signs things are a bit different. Not only are there zombies and vampires, there are steampunk submarines, robotic diving suits and enormous flying jellyfish.It's obvious this is going to be a long-running series. The first volume barely gets Baltimore through one sea voyage. My one complaint is it ended too soon and left me hungry for more.

This is the series that I wanted lobster claw Johnson to be, unfortunately he had no backstory, emotion, and was kind of cheesy at times. This book grabs you right at the start and does not let go. I finished this and had to go buy the Ebooks that night, I couldn't wait. I am big Hellboy fan and I think this is shaping up to be better.

While it is strongly recommended that you read the "Baltimore" book (Expertly written by Mignola and Golden as well as illustrated by the former) it is not necessarily a pre-requisite.The comic offers the proper amount of introduction to Henry Baltimore and his motivations for pursuing the Dread Vampire Lord Haigus throughout the first six issues of this series. While chasing vampires across a war-torn and plague riddled Europe, Lord Baltimore crosses paths with a young gypsy woman who seeks to escape her life of drudgery and embarks on a particularly dangerous leg of Baltimore's journey to find Haigus. They'll run afoul of storms, giant jellyfish, and fungus zombies who wish them ill. Interspersed with this is the beginnings of Lord Baltimore the hunter and the black deeds he has witnessed and committed.For those looking for a fantastic fusion of horror and break-neck adventure, look no further than Baltimore: the Plague Ships!

I have to confess that I absolutely love everything that Mike Mignola puts out. I own every hellboy and bprd series and am now starting on his other works. So when I saw this I had to read it too and it didn't disappoint. Though I haven't read the novel it is based on, its in my cart now for purchase. But even without reading it, these graphic novels are easy to understand and follow. This first set is a great start to this terrific series and leaves open plots to make way for the next collection. If you enjoy Mike and/or vampires you should definitely pick this up. It follows all general vampire rules and even adds more to the lore. Just go read it!

Mike Mignola hits another home run with Baltimore, a story about Lord Baltimore who makes an enemy out of the vampires when he returns from the war. Now, with his family gone, he dedicates his life, and his badass Harpoon, to hunting down every last one of them...and one in particular. Pure Mignola like nobody else.Great action, great story, great dialogue... wonderful aesthetic to the entire book, dark, gloomy, and dangerous the entire time. If you thought Hellboy was a badass, you haven't been introduced to Lord Baltimore. He fights Vampires, Zombies, Nazi Zombies, Giant Floating Jellyfish... you name it. This book is insane and I absolutely love it.You don't need to know anything about the Mignola-Verse (Hellboy, Witchfinder, BPRD, Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien) to enjoy this book. Just pick it up and have fun!

Not a whole lot to say - I loved the story, and loved the art! This is one of those rare books that I'd really enjoy seeing as a movie, too; not to replace the book, but just to see more of this great world that's been created. And it is, indeed, an entire world that you feel you've been plunged into. Not a nice one, to be sure, but a VERY entertaining one. Highly recommended - can't wait to read more of Lord Baltimore's adventures.

The story is kind of formulaic, but the world it's set in is fascinating. Not only is the art totally retroVictorian, but the old fashioned look of that World really enhances the mood. The characters are a bit 2 dimensional. Wish something would happen soon

I recently had to come up to speed with MySQL to solve some major scale issues and I relied heavily on this book. Very highly recommended for -1. This is a practitioner's book. e.g., when it covers "clustered table", it also explains why the secondary indexes on InnoDB tables will be wider than usual. Such similar references are across the book.2. Especially, chapter 5 and 6 are of outstanding value to grok MySQL optimization and parsing subroutines. Pair it with Charles Bell "Expert MySQL" to understand what optimizer actually does and how it is very different from other databases you have worked with (e.g., no hash join etc.)This would be a straight 5-stars if -3. It covered some of the newer features of MySQL 5.6 (or 5.7+)4. Be a little laconic in most, especially earlier, chapters. e.g., does it really need another 35 pages to go over "why and what you should tune"?5. Real-life use cases the top 1-percent of MySQL users who need to extract full juice out of it (e.g., handler interfaces).Overall, great book, hope authors rush a 4th edition.

This book is amazing! It has saved me a couple times at work. Our systems are growing and we are running into performance issues. We are hitting problems you just can't google. This book provides some amazing insight into how MySQL works which has helped us fix some pretty big production bugs quickly. Can't recommend this book highly enough. So far I've used it to better understand Indexing (which it does a great job explaining) and to understand what Deadlocks are and how they occur. I naturally search StackOverflow.com first, but when I wasn't satisfied with StackOverflow answers, I turned to this book and it doesn't disappoint. Very nice work.

If you want to make MySQL perform well, understand the deeper underpinnings related to performance and some administrative tasks, there's a surprising amount of information in the text.The authors guide you through understanding and not just provide platitudes. They show you how to profile a server and use that to help you optimize (focused performance improvement vs. tuning -- implying random tweaking) your server and environment based on their experience. Their shared experience is more than worth the price of the book.They offer some tactics scattered throughout that may be really useful like Computing the Distance Between Points (used in mapping applications)), improving high volume counters using a counter table, and the fastest way to transfer large files.You need this if you want to optimize MySQL. (They cover Replication, Clustering, Sharding, Backup & Recovery, HA among many other topics as well.)11.8.2013 - Still very good. The authors provide deep insights. Must have.

This is a perfect book if you're looking to improve your skills on MySQL. I'd recommend this book if you're at an intermediate level of MySQL knowledge and looking to improve on overall query performance and fine tune MySQL settings. It's a great addition to my bookshelf. Each subsequent edition adds lots of material - I currently own the 1st edition and the 3rd edition and the latter is over twice as thick as the first edition.

I am extremely pleased with my purchase of High Performance MySQL, 3rd edition. I own the 2nd edition and my company recently upgraded to 5.5 so getting the 3rd edition was a no brainer. The book is extremely well organized and more information has been added to every single chapter. The new chapter on MySQL in the cloud is a timely welcome addition. The section on solid stage storage is also an example of how the contents have been updated to reflect the latest technology and trends. The book is full of real world scenarios and solutions the folks at Percona have encountered over the years. They do a great job of noting where features and functionality differs between 5.5 and 5.1 and also make reference to known features coming in 5.6. The level of detail contained within is much deeper than you will find in the online documentation and the authors do a great job of making clear the circumstances where features, configurations, engines and hardware may help or hurt with your specific application.If you are brand new to MySQL this is probably not the right choice for you. The information is presented in a very accessible way though and if you are coming from another RDBMS or have a decent technical background and are committed to learning more MySQL, I recommend it highly. The book is definitely biased towards Linux which the authors admit in the foreward. But even if you are running a WAMP stack you will still find tons of useful information inside. I'm constantly pulling this book off my shelf to look up something real quick; either to confirm a thought or see if the experts have anything else to add on the subject. I can't wait for the 4th edition covering 5.6!

It's well-written, and told me what I needed to know to help a customer. Specifically, the customer wanted to know how to optimize MySQL databases for performance, and the book did have some good tips for that.Although, I must add, that the tip that did my customer the most good wasn't listed in the book. Rather, I found the procedure for placing databases on separate drives by doing a Google search. But still, all-in-all, a useful book.

I turned to Chapter 4 when I got it, read 9 pages, and felt like I already got my money's worth of value. It'd take days to distill this book's information out of blogs, forums, and mailing lists on my own. I can at least feel like the authors experience has been vetted - blogs, forums, and mailing lists have dubious reliability in comparison.

You'd be hard-pressed to find the kind of in-depth information this book contains anywhere else. This is in-depth information on complicated settings of storage engines and examples about handling race conditions and other advanced performance topics.

The Forgotten 500ByGregory A. FreemanEvery once in a while you discover a book that envelopes your emotions and you wonder how those events could happen. This is one of those stories, a true story.During WWII one of the Nazis’ main sources of fuel was an oil refinery in Ploesti, Romania. The Allied Powers made it their mission to destroy this refinery by sending countless missions from Brindisi, Italy, over Yugoslavia to Ploesti to bomb the facility. In the course of these missions, many B24 bombers were shot down and hundreds of Allied flyers (mostly Americans) were stranded behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia, a country that most did not know the language or customs.At that time in Yugoslavia there were two ruling factions. Draza Mihailovich, a staunch friend of the United States hated the Nazis and wanted to free his country from their grasp. Josip Broz Tito, a communist and ally of Russia also hated the Nazis, wanted to get rid of them and, interestingly enough, the two men hated each other. You had a dramatic triad, Mihailovich and Tito, each commanding thousands of soldiers fighting each other for control of Yugoslavia and each fighting the Nazis, their common enemy.Flyers would parachute into Yugoslavia, not having any idea how they would be received by the populace and wondering if they would be turned over to the Nazis. Much to their surprise and relief villagers would welcome them, hide them in their homes and share their meager supply of food. These villagers would risk their lives guiding them through the mountains of Yugoslavia to the troops of Mihailovich. English speaking Yugoslavians were few and far between and most communication was with gestures and pantomime.After days and, sometimes weeks, the group would reach Pranjane, Yugoslavia and be united with other flyers. This was Mihailovich’s accumulation point and ended up holding approximately 500 airmen. They would spend months with nothing to occupy their time and no communication with the allies.During this time, on a political front, Mihailovich was falling out of favor with the British because of the machinations of a Russian mole named James Klugman placed high in British intelligence. This had the effect of spoiling his relationship with the Americans, as well, though totally unfair. The few Americans who had spent time with Mihailovich behind enemy lines and had made it back knew the truth and were a small group trying to salvage the relationship and put together a rescue for the downed flyers.After several failed attempts to land an initial team at Pranjane to help prepare for the rescue as a combined British and American effort, the Americans decided to go it alone because of their belief of British sabotage. The Americans were able to land the team and, using the men there, built a runway in the mountainous region with hand tools which was no small effort. C-47 cargo planes were the ones chosen for the exfiltration and required a landing strip of 700 feet. The one built was exactly 700 feet with trees and mountains all around it. There was no room for error.Considering the fact that each plane only would hold 12 passengers and held just enough fuel to make the round trip from Brindisi to Pranjane, it is no small miracle that between August 9, 1944 and December 28, 1944, the Americans rescued over 500 airmen, 345 of them Americans with no fatalities. This, despite the fact they were flying over enemy territory in slow planes, easy targets for German Messerschmitt fighters.The trumped up case of Mihailovich collaborating with the enemy got worse because of Klugman and other communists in the ranks and he was cut off from the United States. Despite this, he remained a friend to the end and saw to it the airmen were protected at Pranjane through the entire operation.Not much longer the war ended and Tito gained control of Yugoslavia. He still hated Mihailovich and had him executed. Though Mihailovich was a friend to the very end, we aided in his execution and the eventual Communist control of Yugoslavia. Not our finest moment in history.Winston Churchill was later quoted saying that his handling of Yugoslavia was his biggest mistake of the war.In 1997 declassified British papers confirmed the Klugman/Mihailovich story and the truth was official. Mihailovich deserved much better.Sixty years after this travesty on May 9, 2005 the Legion of Merit was presented to Gordana Mihailovich for the actions of her father for the United States in WWII,In writing a review, it can be hard to decide what to include and not to include. It is a review, after all, not the book itself. Gregory Freeman has so much in this book that is not in this review and does a great job in telling this story that every American should hear. I appreciate him writing it.

Interesting story about a little known event of WWII, where General Draza Mihailovich of Yugoslavia, a Nazi-occupied nation helped the rescue of American (and other nationalitiies) flyers when their planes were shot down after bombing runs on the heavily defended Ploesti oil fields of Romania. Also a study in how America failed to come to the aid of the courageous and patriotic leader of this effort when he was jailed and killed by his political enemy, Marshall Josip Broz Tito who orchestrated the takeover of Yugoslavia by Stalin and the Soviet Union as part of the division of Europe and Asia by Churchill and Roosevelt/Truman at the end of WWII.

This is a great book and reveals the inequities of USand British Policy during WWII. The US State Department turned away from the downed US airmen and those who saved them. Had it not been for the brave Serbian Villages and Soldiers under the leadership of Serbian General Mihailovich, fighting against the Wehrmacht, our downed airman would have ended up in enemy hands. If not for those brave Serbians and the US OSS, who put together a very risky plan to rescue the Forgotten 500 and it worked, most would have either not survived or been captured to suffer in POW Camps! All involved were heros. Our policy of the State Department and the administration, would have for political expediency just look the other way. The travesty of selling General Mihailovich down the river, having not supplied him in his efforts and then when he was given a show trial by Tito, Stalin's puppet, was a terribly sad day in American History. This book sheds the light on an amazing part of WWII history covered up by Washington intentionally sacrificing our heros and the heros who saved them!

Very interesting story for me, but hard to follow, the story was imbedded with the intricate politics of Pre-WWII to the modern day and jumped around a bit. Still it was a untold story that deserved to be told. I managed to acquire a smoldering hatred for the British SOE and their ilk along with our own State Department. If you read the book I think you will latch on to the same resentment. The actual rescue was a marvelous feat, very exciting and suspenseful as you did not really know it's outcome except from the book title. People who have served in the Balkans would certainly agree with bits and pieces, parts and possibly parcels in the book, It does jump from the 90's to the 20's to the 40' to the 30's to the 50's and to modern day and back and forth till your mind is completely jumbled. The research and subject deserve five plus stars, but you have to dedicate yourself to paying attention, a quality I lack.
