This book by Jeremy Myers is easy to read and is very practical in its explanations.I like the way Jeremy highlights the fact that these gifts are not only for church services but for the world out there as part of our testimony. Each gift is explained in such a natural way that makes total sense. I found new aspects of the gifts that I've never heard before which encouraged me to relook at my own giftings.I definitely recommend this book.

According to Mr. Myers, we shouldn't. In a simple presentation, he offers his view of the Spiritual Gifts, and some of the characteristics for each of them (with strengths and pitfalls). The book also suggest five simple ways of discerning your gift, including a test in the end. While a test can be useful, much more useful are the other ways, like asking yourself what YOU think the Christians should do more...Overall, it is a nice approach on the subject.

I can always recommend any book by Jeremy Myers. He has a gift to present theological issues in a new and refreshing way. The issue of Spiritual gifts is always a huge talking point in the church. You will be amazed how down to earth he explains it in this book.It is really worth the read.

Ok, bear with me for some history if you will.I have 2 fave GF authors, one of whom gave me that first eye-opening muffin recipe. I had no idea there was baking without wheat, and handing that first muffin to my treat-deprived-for-months hubby and seeing his expression as he bit into it, was truly priceless. The other author gave me the best quick breads and cakes, which I freely adapt by substituting applesauce for much of the butter, and sugar substitute for much of the sugar, and they are still comparable to wheat.But... but. Neither of these gave me a yeast bread that worked for me. Sad misshapen piles of dough that would not respond no matter how expensive the commercial flour mix was. Doorstops, sliced thin and toasted with a lot of melted cheese, that hubby gamely tried to eat. They ended up on the compost pile where they rotted, since even the birds knew better.I bought this book because it was well reviewed and cheap, and I was getting desperate. I was not hopeful, though, because in the excerpt, the author recommends bean flours to add rise and nutrition, and I cannot tolerate the smell and flavor of garbanzo flour. However, I was seduced by her frequent use of the word "springy" to describe her loaves; this soft resilient texture has been noticeably absent from all my GF attempts. She also repeated a promise of non-crumbly slices; another selling point since all my GF yeast breads were sadly determined to fall apart at the approach of a hand or knife.The book arrived and I spent some quality time familiarizing myself with it. The most promising flour mix called for Garfava flour, which was out. I substituted half brown rice and half white rice flour for the garfava. I didn't have Egg Replacer, so left it out; the author said that was ok since it's really a dough enhancer like vinegar but has some yeast, minerals, etc in addition to acetic acid to help the rise. (Edit: Using 1/6 part of white bean flour helped the rise and texture of my breads, especially keeping them from settling. The smell is bad, but dissipates once baked. In a later batch I used the egg replacer, which helped also., So the 4 flour bean mix is best, and best mixed as described though you can leave out the gelatin.)Ok, I had a flour mix. I tried two recipes, the basic bread (to which I added onion powder and a handful of sharp cheese) and the basic yogurt bread, cinnamon raisin variation. The first was mixed and went into a regular glass loaf pan, the second went into a glass casserole dish, both covered with wrap and left on my stove. The cheese bread rose nicely but slowly and went in to bake; the raisin bread (sitting on top of the stove) popped up beautifully after I started the oven. One GF blogger has said that pans make a huge difference in GF yeast bread success, but I saw no difference between the ones I used.Of course I couldn't wait for the breads to cool; I immediately cut a slice when they came out. It was an epic OMG moment - this bread was springy, moist, FABULOUS. Without comment I handed a cheese bread slice to my hubby; his eyes widened and he said "This tastes like potato bread. It's the best you've made in years."The next day the breads are still soft, springy, non-crumbly. Both breads sliced easily, tasted great and were closer to wheat bread than anything I've made since we went GF. Hubby had a turkey and cheese sandwich that afternoon; his first in almost 2 years. Bette Hagman is my GF yeast bread guru; I am excited about bread-making again!Here's what else you need to know. There are 200 recipes here, classic to exotic (amaranth and quinoa, even) and you should be able to find many that suit your taste. You will use 2-3 times more tapioca starch and corn starch than flours(up to 4 cups each for a small batch; that's a 24 oz bag almost), so buy accordingly. If you are just starting out GF, expect to spend a bit on ingredients, maybe up to $200; buy bulk on Amazon! Get a big bowl to make up the mix in; it takes up a lot of space and you need to mix it well. And be prepared to store this lovely mix somewhere cool, dry and dark. By all means try the bean flour in a small batch; some folks aren't put off by the smell and the nutrition you gain is worth the effort. Be sure you spray the tops well with some sort of oil when you prep for rise as the batter is sticky and will stick to the wrap if it possibly can. Watch your rise; if you let it over-rise it will lack oven spring, and will crumple when it cools (Bette tells you what to look for). If you've made breads with wheat before, forget what you know; most of it will hinder your success with GF. You should keep the breads out of the fridge (they dry out), so only cook what you can eat in a couple of days. It's soft and moist, and will mold quickly. Last but not least, when you do have a forgotten loaf end or brownies that get hard and too dry to eat, crumble, dry in a warm oven then pulse in the food processor; voila, GF bread crumbs for cooking and cookie crumbs for pie crusts. This stuff is far too expensive to waste!Now, go buy this book and get back your yeast breads.

I got excited when I saw that it had great reviews because it included instructions for bread machines. I just purchased one and wanted to make my own bread instead of paying $5-$6 for GF loaves in the stores. What I didn't catch was this book was written 15 years ago when gluten-free recipes were hard to come by. That being said, the majority of her recipes use bean flours or other ingredients that I have found through painful trial and error that my gut will not tolerate. Her "four flour bread mix" is misleading as it contains the very ingredients that set my gut off. I am very disappointed with this purchase and will use more diligence in the future when buying gluten-free cookbooks. This book is going into the donation bin.

If fluffiness and lightness are your ultimate goals when baking bread, this is the book for you. The recipes are easy to follow for a novice bread maker. I have baked bread for years so I often go a little off the beaten path and have included some notes and recommendations below for you more adventurous types.Most of the recipes are set up like bread machine recipes and have 3 sizes. I don't own a machine anymore so I follow the hand baking instructions with no problem. A medium recipe will make a super high, super big 9x5 loaf. The large recipe make 2 smaller loaves. I find the smaller loaves to be easier to handle.If you haven't done much bread making before I would get an instant read thermometer for any hand baking because you want your liquids to be around 110 F and the bread is done when the inside of the loaf is about 205 F.If hand baking, be sure to score the bread lengthwise done the center right before putting it in the oven. This will help avoid huge air bubbles in the bread. I also brush the top of the loaf with oil (coconut, canola, or vegetable) before I let it rise so it does not stick to the plastic wrap I cover it with.ALSO, cover the bread with tin foil after about 10 minutes of baking so your loaf does not get too brown.I have started experimenting with subbing most of the "flours" (as opposed to the starch" ) in the mixes and recipes with whole grain flour like quinoa, millet, teff, buckwheat, brown rice, etc to get a little more nutrition and the results have been just as nice. I also add 1/4 cup of flax meal. (Slightly lower rise, but still incredible for GF bread.)For fun, I have used coconut flour and coconut oil for a tasty treat. Even added a handful of shredded coconut once. MMMM! Since coconut oil hardens around 78 degrees, I melt it in a cup of the warmed water.I have been using the sourdough starter with great results. I recommend leaving the lid off of the starter (as long as it is not fly season) when out of the fridge so that it can capture some of the wild yeasts in the air. This makes it more probiotic.I do NOT use butter milk powder, egg replacer, dry milk powder, rye flavor powder, etc. and have not missed them. I also do not use commercial dough enhancer which I found out is just Soy Lechitan, ground ginger, and vinegar granules. Instead I add 1 tsp of ginger and 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar to the dough. Don't worry, the ginger flavor does not come through in the bread. Just make sure the batter is the right constancy.Happy Baking

Involved in two collisions where I had the opportunity to put the strategies presented in this book to work. On both occasions, the process worked well up until the negotiations. Needless to say, I had to hire attorneys for both collisions and to file civil suits.

I highly recommend this book!I sustained injuries in a car accident. I had no knowledge or experience dealing with insurance claims. I was concerned about dealing with the insurance adjuster, feeling like an amateur competing against a seasoned professional.I bought this book a few weeks after the accident. It was EXTREMELY helpful in understanding the "system" - general background, role of each player, process, typical timeline, examples, suggestions of "good ideas vs bad ideas," etc. This book pointed out a number of traps to avoid and saved me from just going along with what SEEMED like reasonable suggestions from the insurance adjuster. After 3 months, I hired an attorney, realizing from this book that I could not handle the situation on my own.My only regret is that I did not find this book the day after the accident. It would have saved me some sleepless nights.

This book was ok. However, it was so vague that if you have anything other than a minor car accident, this book is not worth it. Actually, I wish I'd had it to review BEFORE my first phone conversations with the insurance company, as it gives some good advice for those crucial first conversations.

I was rear-ended in 2010 just 18 days after I purchased a brand new car. This car immediately lost its value and I was injured in the crash. I could have hired an attorney to settle my claim, but I first wanted to see what it might be worth and how the system worked. This book was extremely helpful. I was able to successfully resolve the property damage claim for a reasonable amount and the bodily injury claim as well all without hiring an attorney. The book has a lot of good advice and sample letters to assist in writing claims and what to do to negotiate or further pursue the claim after the first few settlement offers. This book, along with a lot of patience, was very helpful in my settling my own claim. I'm very glad I purchased it.

I do not understand the negative reviews for this novel. For those mature readers who expected another Myron Bolitar adventure, you should remember this is a young adult novel written about a 15 year old protagonist. It wasn't written for the Myron audience, but for the new and engaged Mickey readers. Lighten up.This is a great and suspenseful younger reader suspense and adventure romp. It is nuanced enough to hold the interest of a mature reader like myself, but I am not the target audience. I believe that such an action packed novel, with no adult language or sexuality, and very little actual violence is a lot like a new generational Nancy Drew. Can it stand as a timeless piece of fiction? Of course not. Can it engage and involve younger readers and encourage their pursuit of pleasure reading? It sure can! I am delighted to highly recommend this novel.

Mickey, along with his friends Spoon and Ema, is trying to find out who shot their friend Rachel. Mickey is also still dealing with questions about his father's recent death, his mother's hospitalization for drug addiction, and his new relationship with his Uncle Myron. Throw in his adjustment to a new school and trying out for the basketball team and you have an action-packed adventure.I liked the relationship between the kids. Spoon is quite a nerdy character but both Mickey and Ema accept him as he is. He is also very observant and comes up with some of the needed clues to solve the main mystery in this story. Unfortunately, he gets shot in this one and is still in serious condition at the end of the story. I need the next book to find out his fate.I also liked Mickey's relationship with Ema. He considers her his best friend despite the fact the he doesn't know anything about her home life or even if she has a home. I can understand his hurt feelings when he does learn some of Ema's secrets.The bigger mystery - all about the Abeona Shelter and what they are doing - is left unsolved in this story. Again, I hope the next book will answer some of those questions.Fans of mysteries with teen detectives will enjoy the Mickey Bolitar series and may even want to read some of the Myron Bolitar mysteries.

The 2nd Mickey Bolitar book is a fast-paced mystery involving the shooting of Mickey's new romantic interest, Rachel and her the killing of her mother. As Mickey tries to visit her in the hospital with his friends providing a diversion, he finds her in her room, but must quickly hide because the sheriff is coming to question her. Mickey goes to Bat Lady in her haunted house to try to get some answers and he is further confused to find out the man from the ambulance when his father died was not part of the ambulance crew, but someone known as the Butcher. This someone also resembles a man who killed many children during the holocaust, but how can that be the same man? As a sophomore, Mickey is excited about trying out for the basketball team and hoping to make JV. But as Mickey digs deeper, he and his friends are at risk of being injured. It is only with his solo trip to the Bat Lady's house, finding someone in the house, seeing the halls filled with pictures of children during the Holocaust and also children who are missing now, and a fiery blaze that pushes him out of the house, that Mickey realizes there is much more at work than he realizes. He doesn't feel he can confide in anyone really, even his uncle. The mystery continues to deepen, I was so involved in the story, I did not want it to end. I was not very happy with the ending, Harlan Coben just didn't leave you hanging the way her did in the first book, Shelter. But I will read the 3rd book and hope the ending is a cliff hanger, like the first.

This is another over the fence hit for Harlan Coben. Mickey is just like his uncle.....he can't stay away from danger. It just follows him around like a shadow. This second book is more exciting than the first. The characters seem so real that I expect to see them walking down the street! There is never a dull moment from the turning of the first page. You feel drawn into the drama of Mickey dealing with his dad's death, mom's drug abuse, Uncles unwanted presence, Bat Lady, Ball Head, and his pack of friends; Spoon and Ema. I couldn't put it down.This would be a great mini series or even television show. Kudos to Coben for introducing a line of characters that capture your interest and keep it. You want to be there solving mysteries with them, and can't wait for the next!

There is more HUvB here than Adrienne, but it's a good summary of the theological debates which were going on late in the last century. Makes you glad you did not become a theologian. They held the line of rationality against the modernists and reducionists.

Although I have not yet completed this book, the chapters that I have read were excellent, deep and spiritually thought provoking.

Adrienne is a Catholic mystic whose writing is deeply imbued with the Spirit of Truth and Wisdom which does not come from man but is clearly a gift of love for us all.

Wonderful book - very deep. I'm not very far into it; this book does not lend itself to a quick reading, although it is very well written. It is wonderful to read a page or a paragraph and then ponder and pray it through. This is not an over-the-top devotional style book, but rather a deep study of Mary's character and formation. I highly recommend this book!

Though profoundly Catholic, this is a beautiful theological approach to motherhood, with all it's joys, hardships, disappointments, demands, and irreplaceable adventure, Mary was not soared of any of these, but her love and surrender made the impossible possible. The book is not only a hymn to motherhood but to femininity.

Roberts writes in clear, easy to understand prose, surveying the battle from the strategic to the tactical levels. He includes a number of well-chosen vignettes at the individual level to provide a sense of scale of the battle, as well as necessary explanation on the equipment and organizations of the participating armies.Roberts quickly touches a number of the academic controversies about the battle. Among others, these include the status of Napoleon's health during the Waterloo Campaign, the extent of Wellington's surprise at the French crossing of the border, the placement of allied troops at Hal to block a possible French flanking manuever on the Mont St. Jean position, and the cooperation between Wellington and Blucher. In each case, he deftly mentions the nature of the controversy, offers a brief opinion, and moves on. Serious students of Waterloo may find this approach overly simplified, but it should suffice for the average reader. Roberts does go to some effort to mention the the contributions of all members of the allied coalition that fought at Waterloo, including Belgian and Dutch units that are often neglected.The treatment of the course of the battle of Waterloo follows a commonly used breakdown of the combat into five phases. Roberts' real gift is his ability to present the story of Waterloo in a manner that covers the significant details but can be followed by the average reader. Of necessity, Roberts has simplified a great deal of information to achieve the short format; this work is focused on the battle rather than the larger campaign of the hundred days. He includes a nice bibliography for those readers seeking more detail. Is there any battle in history as famous as Waterloo? Although there are many remarkable battles, very few are as dramatic, consequential, or well known as the one that took place on a rainy June day in an otherwise unremarkable little village in the Belgian hinterland.Just over a year ago, My wife and I visited the battlefield for the first time (I admit that the site had little interest to me back when I lived in Brussels). Today, it contains an excuisit and elaborate visiting center, complete with Video and graphic presentations, and a bookstore in which you can find materials about the battlefield in almost every European language and several non-European ones.After the impressive Visiting Center, the site itself is a great disappointmnet; It contains a tall hill constructed many years after the battle, from which you can see the field as none of the participants could at the time. I must confess that, gazing downwards at the slight slopes of Mont St. Jean, I've been utterly incapable of imagining the carnage that brought me, along with millions of other tourists, to that spot, almost two centuries after it has ended.Although I've been to the battlefield, and read a highly entertaining account of the campaign in David King's masterly book on the Congress of Vienna (Vienna, 1814: How the Conquerors of Napoleon Made Love, War, and Peace at the Congress of Vienna), Andrew Roberts' account gives the most succicent description of the campaign and its underlying strategy. If it then dwelves too much on the tactics for my tastes, that surely says more about my limited interest in military history than on the merits of the work; On the other hand, true devotees of l'Histoire Militaire are unlikely to find much that is new in this slender tomb.Napoleon's return from Alba brought about a new European crisis, with the various powers of the day gathering armies with all the speed they could master to confront the Corsican Emperor. Napoleon's prefered strategy against the numerically superior powers was to match and defeat each army in turn, before they united together.In June 1815, Napoleon's enemies had two armies in the field: a mostly Prussian one, led by General Blucher, and a mostly English one led by The Duke of Wellington. On the 16th of June, Napoleon split his forces and engaged both armies; The British held their ground, and the Prussian fled... but not far enough.The failure to destroy either Blucher or Wellington's forces meant that time was running out for Napoleon. Superb generalship would be required to destroy Wellington's armies before the Prussians could join them. The emperor, past his prime and shorn of his best henchmen, did not rise to the challenge. The 17th of June contained little action, while Wellington positioned his forces on a ground of his chosing; The battle for Europe waited for the morrow.Foul weather delayed the attack, as Napoleon waited for the ground to dry. Waterloo was a relatively small battlefield, and allowed little place for Napoleon's usual prefered manouvers. The assaults would be direct, brutal, and hopefully decisive.They weren't. Through the chaos, and despite frequent setbacks, the English forces held firm. Sucsessive attempts to break the English line failed. The last attack, by Napoleon's elite Imperial Guard, came as late as 7:30 PM. By that time, Blucher's forces were joining the melee in droves. Napoleon's armies broke.The conquerors of Napoleon met around 9 O'clock in a little inn, one that was on Napoleon's side of the battle just hours earlier. "Quelle Affaire!" proclaimed Blucher to his English counterpart. It is Ironic that the only language they shared was that of their defeated foes.Some 120,000 Men died in the Waterloo campaign. Seventy one thousand of them in the battle itself. Napoleon's reign would be over within weeks of that fateful say. The campaign marked the beginning of Europe's long peace - a peace that lasted, albeit with isolated and sharp interruptions, from that June battle until another June day, almost a century later, when a young Austrian was assassinated in Sarajevo.

The guide covered all of the sites I wished to visit. I found the restaurant guide helpful - sometimes very good based on my tastes, but I did not use the hotel guide. We rented a condo for the weeks we were there. The book does have some helpful websites plus telephone numbers and in many instances, a specific address and directions. We used public transportation. I did not find suggested busses/trolleys listed with primary sites, but the guide did have websites listed. I found the public transportation website very useful. I wish that all Spanish names & sites had phonetic pronunciation; a few did but most did not. It did seem to be written with more information that I needed. Photos were a bonus. The general maps were helpful, but the specific area maps were very helpful. I have purchased Fodor's guides before and I probably will again.

The book gave some of the basics, but I generally got more from other Fodor's guides. The suggested itineraries were rather brief, and the book overall, in each subject, really just seemed to touch the surface. The book clearly gave me some ideas of what to do and see and where to go, but I felt like I would need more information from somewhere else before I could make plans.

Moving to SD in about a week. Got this a while ago thinking it might be informative. Not so much. Biggest gripe: lots of space used covering various hotels and restaurants. Who the hell doesn't have TripAdvisor/Yelp/etc. apps in their pocket at all times?! The modern guidebook should take that into account and focus more on things free apps do NOT already do better. Descriptions of some neighborhoods were only a sentence or two. More disappointing, the more I think about it. Just cut back another star. The map isn't good or useful either. Also, the most recent edition is a year+ old.Instead of this book, poke around on Trip Advisor and other sites and apps. Free. Better.Note to publishers: Want a better guide? I'll give you a neighborhood by neighborhood guide of what to do in SD. People don't buy travel guides for lists of hotels and restaurants anymore.

Great guide. I am using this guide to plan every aspect of a future trip to San Diego. From the hotel section to the beaches section to the must see attractions this book has been extremely helpful. I wish I had had this book when I had visited San Diego several years ago.

I recently moved to San Diego, and thought I might as well treat the city like I do other cities when traveling. I've used various Fodor books before and have always enjoyed - full of so much information packed into a little book. I woud imagine these books would even be great if you're from the city!

The book was very helpful in a business trip in San Diego. Very detailed and will be great to much longer trip. A map would make this book five stars.
