Mae Adams was born in Korea in 1933 as the second daughter of an aristocratic family and abandoned by her mother when she was born, for she was not a son she wanted or needed. In the Korean family system of that time, the first-born son was a blessing as he inherited the family fortune and was responsible for the entire family. After the war, she became the breadwinner of her family, managing export businesses, and dreamed of going to America to get a college education. She met the man of her dreams, an American Marine colonel, but left him to pursue her education.During the three years of her separation from him, she continued a long-distance love affair with the colonel. Finally, she married her colonel and raised a family. After 43 years together, her husband passed away when she was 71. Through the grieving process, she started to write her memoir as therapy. From that first book, “Precious Silver Chopsticks†was born. She is now working on her second and third books.Her step-grandmother raised her like her daughter in a Korean mountain village. She was a commoner.Family blood didn’t run in her grandma’s veins, but Mae believed that the hand of Providence blessed her special relationship with her. Was the blessing of Providence not more powerful than a mere family bloodline? She took care of her for the first crucial year of her life.Living through World War II and the Korean War and overcoming many more obstacles, in 1961, Mae went to the United States at the age of 28, to get a college education.Three years later, she married a US Marine colonel whom she met in Korea and raised a family. She ran a successful business until her husband had a stroke in 1991 and became the primary caregiver for her husband for the last thirteen years of his life.Now (2017) she is in her early eighties and still in good health. English is her fourth language, and she still has trouble struggling through English grammar. So, she wrote this book from her heart, out of love and gratitude for her grandma, husband, and all the wonderful people in her life. She lives in McCormick, SC, USA, near her daughter’s family.This book reflects the author's life, touching on subjects that touched her soul, like the influence of upper-class, social standing, economic and cultural upbringing, Korean history, virtues and rites, education and more. These aspects played an important role with fate on the path of her life.Confucian guidelines of gender and class segregation.is explained in the book: “Be a humble wife. Control your emotions or desires. Accept the treatment of your husband, either good or bad. A good wife doesn’t question her husband even if he sleeps with a gisaeng or a concubine. She should keep her mouth shut if he walks out on her and should accept him gracefully if he comes back. A good wife doesn’t have an opinion. .. ...Who cares about that rotten eighteenth-century Confucian virtue?, the author thought.We mostly learn of Mae's dreams of a new life, loves and husband. Her marriages, hardships of war, her escape to South Korea, and challenges risen from family discord, religion, superstitions, spirituality, evil spirits, and more, are dominant.The title of the book : "about silver chopsticks" made me realize to find deeper meaning:Mae says:"Wait! I had my silver chopsticks in my pants pocket. Could I kill a man with my silver chopsticks? If so, how and where in his body should I stick them? But, didn’t Little-Pa tell me that my chopsticks could protect me from any worldly harm?"Mae was given the chopsticks at birth.... and when she came to a cross-road, we sought power in her chopsticks.Mae's grandma says:“If you have your silver chopsticks, you will never be hungry. I don’t want you to be hungry ever, my child. They will also protect you from poisonous food by changing colors. So, if you ever see the color of your chopsticks change, don’t eat the food,†she said. “Grandma, would anybody want to poison my food?†But as a child the noodles kept on slipping, sliding and falling off her chopsticks. When she got tired of that, she grabbed a handful of noodles with her hand and stuffed them into ger mouth, while nobody was looking, but that was the only time.Mae had to learn how to handle them because she was afraid that the old man who made her chopsticks would get mad and take them away from her by some magic.Yes, Mae could easily write a book about the life she lived with Hewitt and says:"It wasn’t all white rice and a garden of Everlasting Flowers. I even stumbled on some thorny bushes that hurt me......"He was eighty-nine years old. His last moment was peaceful, in his bed, in the privacy of his castle. Later, Mae found her silver chopsticks nestled among Hewitt's insignias and medals in his treasure box. Mae knew he had them, but she never looked for them. She had used the chopsticks as a symbol of connection between her and her husband. as divine protection. Precious Silver Chopsticks by Mae Adams is an uplifting and heartbreaking story of a woman who started at the top, fell to the bottom, and climbed the ladder to return to the top. Mae was born in North Korea in 1933. Being the second daughter in the family, she was pushed aside by both her father and her mother. Her father ignored her because he had wanted a son, but never caused her any harrm. Her mother was more abusive in her treatment of Mae to seek love elsewhere, and she found it with her grandmother and grandfather. While her parents were wealthy and part of the aristocracy, her grandparents were commoners which allowed her to experience life from two different perspectives. This allowed her to grow as a person in ways that were greatly help her later in life. She learned that anything worth having has to be earned, and that people who you can count on will do anything for you no matter the cost. This was especially true after WW II when her family fled to the south. From here, the aristocratic life was over and the hard work had to begin. But Mae had already learned how to overcome these obstacles and she knew how to lift herself back up.This was a phenomenal read. Mae has done a wonderful job telling us the hardships she had to go through and the victories she accomplished on the road to where she is today. The story is well written a great attention has been given to editing and flow. This is just one more feather in an already very full cap. Excellent job to the author, and I hope that she continues to write.
Precious Silver Chopsticks wonderfully written memoir of a North Korean girl and her journey to America. From her childhood days to a successful career and family life, Mae Adams relates all the perils and difficulties she went through. Facing her mother’s rejection, her life with her grandmother in rural North Korea, having to flee to South Korea after World War II and enduring Japanese invasion, her story is full of sorrow, but with a great reward waiting for her. Now, with a family of her own, Mae Adams lets the reader into her journey and a fantastic cultural glimpse of her native country. From her early childhood Adams faced tremendous hardship. Born into a wealthy and noble family, her mother rejected her and sent her to her grandmother, a kind woman who teaches Adams about her Korean heritage. From then on, Adams relates her life experiences, moving to the U.S. to pursue a college education and marrying a Marine officer she met in Korea. The book is a delectable maelstrom of cultural clashes, from her Japanese-styled education in Korea, which was very highly regarded, concluding with her inspiring life in the U.S., where she still lives at the age of 80.

Three years later she married a US Marine colonel whom she had met earlier in Korea and together they raised a family.Mary ran her own successful business for years until her husband suffered a stroke in 1991, she was his primary caregiver till his death thirteen years later. English is her fourth language.I went into details of telling her story because the book is about the rise of an extraordinary woman in the Korean culture, The book just like the woman is great, it tells a wonderful story and is filled with so many lessons. Personally, I learnt a lot from it and whenever I read a good book there is nothing I love more than passing it on to others and if you're contemplating getting this book, go ahead it's a great book, it's insightful and thought provoking, no reader wouldn't be charmed by her. All round a very good book which I strongly recommend.
